The College Chapter
I read today that eight of ten Freshmen in college "believe in God" but less than half of them are "secure" in their faith. that is based on a study done by the Highter Education Research Institute of 112,232 college freshmen.
I'm beginning to think that the college chapter may be the most pivotal stage in a person's spiritual development. I've read statistics that suggest that 80% of churched kids quit church after college. That is an unbelievable attrition rate. I think one of two things happens in college: either our faith is personalized or we divorce ourselves from our childhood faith.
Helen Astin, co-author of the HERI study said, "In some ways, the study took us by surprise" since youth are considered to be self-absorbed and materialistic. The date shows that the vast majority of college freshmen are "in a serious search for deeper meaning."
Growing up in busy homes, according to New York University professor Claire Gaudini, may be a contributing factor to Generation Y's desire to balance material and spiritual pursuits.
A Reboot study of 1,400 youth found that 27 percent are disenchanted with "organized religion." It also found that 48% of college freshmen were "doubting" "seeking" or "conflicted" about religious matters.
83% believe in the sacredness of life
80% have an interest in spirituality
79% believe in God
64% believe you can grow spiritually without being religious
61% pray weekly
