So Far So God
I just blogged on personalizing Scripture. Here's an example. I know there is a fine line. I want to stay true to the intent of the text. But there is something powerful that happens when you put something in your own words. It's the difference between the pre-printed note on a romantic card and the handwritten note from the one you love. Sometimes I try to put Scripture into my own words. Here is one I thought of today. II Samuel 7:12 is one of my favorite Scriptures. The prophet Samuel builds a stone altar and names it Ebenezer which means in Hebrew: "Hiterto the Lord has helped us." I once neutered that verse and said it means "so far so good" but that takes God out of the equation. So here's what I thought of today: So far so God (SFSG). It's a play on the aphorism "so far so good." But it gives God the credit for everything that has happened. I'm liking it. When I look back at my life I can't help but think, "So far so God." He's the one who has gotten me where I am. When I look at the eight year process of buying and building Ebenezers, our coffeehouse on Capitol Hill, I can't help but think, "So far so God."
