Godcasts: The Evolution of Information

Can you believe that Bible used to be chained to pulpits in the middle ages? Picture it. Information was limited to the length of a chain. It was like a leash on information. Now compare that image with invisible radio waves flying around you all the time! Information is everywhere. All you need is an antenna and tuner. Does that amaze anything else? Maybe I'm a simpleton, but we take "modern miracles" for granted.

What does that have to do with podcasting? I think it's all about the evolution of information. Information used to travel at the speed of ships and horses. News of America's revolution in 1776 took weeks to get back to England. It took the Pony Express days to get a letter across the country.

I can't remember where I read it, but someone said "podcasting is to radio what blogging is to journalism." It's the democritization of information. It's the death of distance. It's like TIVO for television. You choose what you want to listen to when you want to listen to it. And it automatically downloads. You can get spiritual fed by a "feeder" like feedburner. We've come a long ways since the days of "chained Bibles."

I just read about KYOU in San Francisco, the first all-podcast radio. It takes talk radio to the extreme. Listeners become the hosts and DJs. It's open-source radio. I think some Christian radio station somewhere will follow suit. And it's only time before webcasts become broadcasts.

We have an unprecedented opportunity to "go into all the world" without even leaving our computer terminal. I'm not suggesting that podcasting is a replacement for traditional missions. We'll invest $250,000 in missions this year. We'll keep taking more and more missions trips. But I'm a both/and thinker. We've got to go and give and click our mouses. I'll often get emails from around the world from people who read an evotional or blog or listen to a message. We have a unique opportunity to do what Jesus said and take the gospel into all the world.

For what it's worth, I've never even been to South America but we're impacting that continent because our messages are broadcast on a Christian TV network. I just think it's amazing that I'm talking to people I'll never meet this side of eternity. Podcasting and Godcasting is the next evolution.
