Last week's big idea was your focus determines your reality.
The homework assignment was to find something to be grateful for each day.
Here is mine for September 26: nerf basketball hoops. We celebrated Parker's birthday and one of the gifts was a nerf hoop. It was actually the only gift I personally picked out. And, yes, I had selfish motivations. One of the things I love about being a dad is that I get to be a kid :)
We set up the hoop and I showed Parker the "take two steps, spin around once, shoot it underhand, bank it off two walls, and dunk it" move. Yeah Baby!
I think the trap most people fall into is needing bigger toys to satisfy their urge for fun. I think it's the simple pleasures that provide the greatest joy. Nothing like a game of "horse" on a nerf hoop with your son.
By the way, you know I'm affectionately known as "Mr. UNhandy Man." It took me forty-five minutes to assemble the nerf hoop! I'm not kidding. And I got a bleeding wound under my thumb. And Lora is the one who finally figured it out.

Mark,
looks like this weekend was the 'cut your finger weekend' at church. Pastor Dave and I feel your pain! Kudos for risking life and limb for the sake of Nerft Hoops!
I've also come to realize that NCC is also "striped shirt" church. Last Sunday, 0930 service was a record, I think. Pastor Mark, The worship leader and the prayer leader (sorry I don't know their names) all were wearing striped shirts. I have only ever seen Pastor Mark wear a striped shirt. Long ways or sideways - but always striped...
You mean to tell me that there are non-stripped shirts :)
Just as long as you don't start a poka-dot trend.
Polka dots! Man, now that would be a blast!
Pastor Mark, I agree that simple pleasures are the best. Does anyone remember the Van Kamp's Pork n Beans commercial? There was a voice that sang this song (which is one of my favorites): "Simple pleasures are the best. All the little things that make you smile and glow. All the things you know. Life's simple pleasures are the best; are the best in all the world." I think I may have just dated myself! I was a kid when that commercial was out. Anyhow, it was a kool commercial even then.
Hi Pat,
I've been searching for the jingle for Van Camp's Pork and Beans that has the 'simple pleasures are the best' I have that song in my head, but I really want to have it on my computer so I can play it to remind me of the simple times back in the early 60's and also to play to my wife who has never heard it before.
Do you know where I can get a copy of the song to listen to?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Mark
