No Shirt. No Shoes. No service :)
Had an interesting conversation about webcasting yesterday at our multi-site gathering.
We're going to launch a theaterchurch.com webcast when we launch our coffeehouse services in January so I'm using a lot of hard drive space thinking about it.
I know the great danger is that people would opt for high tech via podcast or webcast and lose out on high touch. Hebrews says "don't forsake the assembling together of yourselves." So podcasting and webcasting are by no means an "alternative." They are a "supplement." I think they are for the person who is testing the waters but not quite ready to step foot into a church yet. That's who we're targeting. I also think they offer a double dose of your weekend message. I see them as spiritual supplements. And it's an easy way to evite someone to NCC. Check out our webcast.
This may sound weird, but one of our goals is for people to be able to attend NCC in their underwear :) Let me explain. Remember those old commercials that picture people working on their home computer in their sciveys? We often talk about our website being our fitting room. I want people to be able to check out NCC in the privacy and security of their own home! Of course, we request that they get dressed before actually coming :)

The team from Christ Fellowship in West Palm Beach said that about 1,000 people watch their live webcast each weekend. One of them said, "Maybe our website is one of our sites." I was thinking the exact same thing when he said it! They are considering a virtual pastor to lead that virtual location.
For what it's worth, I love the webcast that LifeChurch.tv does too. They rock! I think they are setting the standard.
Yesterday I alluded to the fact that maybe iPods should be considered virtual locations. Now with the video iPod release yesterday, everyone can have their own video venue :) By the way, we will sell the video iPod on GodiPod.com. We just need a little time to add it to our menu of iPod options.
I now this ruffles some featers, but we always need to be rethinking the way we do church. I think that is part of incarnation. We're always morphing. If you're doing church the same way you did church a decade ago it might be time for a tune up. Plus that's just downright boring :)
I never want to fall into the trap of doing ministry out of memory! In other words, you just do what you did yesterday. I want to do ministry out of imagination. I think there are ways of doing discipleship that no one has thought of yet. And I think technology has alot to do with that. Digital discipleship.
Carpe Digital.

When you say "webcast" or you specifically referring to live video streaming of your messages, streaming the message after the weekend, or both? Did you see our new steaming while you were here?
Great to finally meet!
Did anyone else see this article on God-blogging?

Brian,
We're thinking about streaming after our weekend services so it won't be live.
Question. Do you know who/how Lifechurch.tv and the Drive Conference do their webcast? Are you guys doing something similar?
If a link is easier than a comment do it that way. I'd love to see/learn more about what you're doing.
We sort of feel like we're navigating a dark room with our shins right now :)

The Drive Conference is using progressive download to deliver a QuickTime file from their server.
Life Church is streaming a Windows Media file I believe from their own server.
We are streaming our messages using Flash from our custom server software. We've posted a lot of details on www.leaveitbehind.com/code
We did Windows Media for 3 years, QuickTime for 9 months, and Flash for about 6 months now. We definitely prefer Flash.
Feel free to shoot me an email with any questions.
Pastor Mark this is awesome!!!!!! I love this! I love the opportunity to hear it and hear it again. You know I'm big on digital discipleship. For the last 8 months or so I have been listening to sermons and so forth digitally almost everyday. You know what the effect has been? It's made me more HIGH TOUCH! The more you hear the Word over and over the more compelled you are to do it. That's what I've found. Can't wait for your webcast. Heidi
