The Magic Number
Every year we do an annual survey on a Sunday morning. It takes about ten minutes, but it's worth the time. It gives us a congregational pulse. It's one of the most important things we do all year.
I'm beginning to process the results so I'll periodically blog about them.
One of the questions we asked was about launching our third theater location. Our vision is to meet in movie theaters @ metro stops throughout the DC area. But I was anxious to see if that still resonated with the congregation-at-large. One of my fears is that we'd lose the vision and get comfortable with two locations!
So we asked the $64,000 question: would you be interested in being part of our launch team to launch our next location?
I was so encouraged by the response. Before we launched Ballston we felt like the magic number was 100. We needed a core of 100 people who were definitely/probably going to be part of our launch team. Three years ago we had 99 people who were definitely/probably willing to be part of the launch. Then I realized I hadn't filled out a survey so it made it 100 on the dot.
Any guesses on how many definitely/probably responses we got this year? 99. And I didn't fill out a survey! So we hit the bulls-eye again! What an amazing confirmation! 100 on the dot. God has an amazing way of confirming vision!
One more thing.
We had 52% of NCCers respond "maybe" on the launch question. That means that more than half of our church is willing to uproot and consider being part of a launch team. I think that is so cool. It says to me that we've got great spiritual flexibility. It shows me that our congregation isn't stuck in a rut. Sure seems like the vast majority is on board with our multi-site vision.

Where were most of the people wanting the new site to be at? I chose "yes" to helping relocate, but it is hard to say for sure if you don't even know where it is relocating to. My vote is for Maryland!!!
Northwest DC came back the strongest, then Crystal City, then Maryland.
I think we do our homework. And then we pray for God to help us pinpoint exactly where we need to be :)
PM: John and I were out of town for the survey. FYI. 101. 103 if you count kids.

NW DC will probably be your strongest bet - somewhere around Dupont or U Street/Adams Morgan. I'm thinking U Street would be cool - but I don't think there are any movie theatres - however - there is the restored Lincoln Theatre and it's by the U Street/Cardoza Green Line metro. It also has the added benefit of having a ton of restaurants and bars all around it - it's young and growing fast. Hey, it's also by the first Results, the gym. (You might get a lot a gay folks checking out the service - so I don't know how that would play out with some of your guest speakers in the summer - but it would certainly be worth checking out).
I vote for Crystal City.
You've already got locations on the Red and Orange Lines. Why not give the Blue Line a chance?
Bethesda/Friendship Heights could also be cool...
(im not a member but have been checking ya'll out) I think the suggestion of looking into the Lincoln Theater is a GREAT one. lots of foot traffic, metro accessible, medium sized venue...
i hope to visit your Union station location soon, have been hearing good things about you all from Rev. Dunn at Baptist World Alliance
