The Creative Class

I read The Rise of the Creative Class by Richard Florida on my plane ride home from Florida last night. Just thought I'd blog a few things.

Florida coined the phrase "creative class" as a counterpart to the "working class." The creative class consists of those people who get paid for their creativity.

In 1900, fewer than 10% of Americans were doing creative work. At the beginning of the 21st century, Florida estimates that one-third of the workforce is doing creative work.

38 million people or 33% of the workforce get paid for their creativity.

Florida says, "We value creativity more highly than ever and cultivate it more intensely."

We no longer live in an information age. We've transitioned to the imagination age.

What does that have to do with the church?

We've got to do ministry out of imagination. We've got to love God with all of our mind as the Great Commandment instructs us. That includes the left-brain and right-brain! The church ought to be the most creative place on the planet. We ought to set the creative standard.
