Sunday Reflections
This was one of those Sundays where I walked away fired up. It was great having most of our church family back from the holidays. And there is always new momentum when we kick off a new series.
Fox News visited our Ballston location for a story on podcasting. The reporter said she'd never been to church in a movie theater and the camerawoman seemed pretty impacted by the service.
I talked about habituation and the fact that most of us sit in the same place week in and week out so I had our congregation get up and "switch sides." We've never done it before. We'll probably never do it again. But I want to throw some curve balls during this Y series.
We're also trying to incorporate more "on location" videos that supplement the "in person" message. Instead of just talking about the "places" I pray we did a field trip via video.

I enjoyed Sunday's message on how prayer can make you more creative. Do you think that habituation makes you less creative? Do you think that some people are just born more creative than others?
I don't ever remember being very creative as a kid and incidentally, now I am in a job where "creative" gets you incarcerated. (You really don't want your CPA/accountant to be creative - think of Enron, Tyco, WorldCom - all the controllers are I believe now in jail. Yet in back in 2000 all three companies and their leaders were hailed by Businessweek for their creativity). But basically I like my job and I like teaching others how to be a good accountant. But when I hear these messages - I feel like maybe I'm teaching them to play it safe at the expense of their youthful dreams and ambitions. Slow and easy can pay good rewards. Sometimes it's not necessary to shoot for the moon. Go for that which has the lowest risk with the highest payout.
Today I did something that I normally don't do - I went to the Monday prayer meeting. It was a good meeting - we prayed well. I met new people and I came away refreshed and ready lead the people who are in my charge.
I wanted to add one more prayer - we forgot to pray for Joe Gibbs - may he lead the Redskins to the Superbowl.
Go Skins!

That whole switching sides thing just threw my whole day off. I even sit in the exact same place on the metro ... crazy.
Hey, I agree it was an awesome launching of your new series. I love the refresher on why prayer is so important. It was neat to hear your perspective and quotes on all the benefits of prayer.
I was with the group from the A/G church in PA (major cow country). The group I went down with liked hearing you live and seeing such a vibrant y/a church.
I also appreciated the hospitality of your staff. Tim E. was very cool and gracious w/ the tour. I also met briefly with your media head Dave Clark. It's a small world. As you know he went to school at Valley Forge C.C. and our home church is not to far from VFCC and has close ties w/ the school. Dave also went to school there with our media head Brady Treat. That was cool to know. Thanks again for letting us experience N.C.C. We hope to be down for Ebenezer's grand opening. Hasta luego.
