Open-Source Church

Bookmark and Share

Life Church rocks.

I've always been a huge fan of the lifechurch.tv podcast. If you don't subscribe, you need to. They are right at the top of my list of churches that I have profound respect for.

I love what Craig Groeshel preaches, but I also love the way he preaches it.

FYI. Craig is a Multnomah guy! Can't wait to get my copy of Chazown. I think it'd be cool if evotional readers "Amazon it" on the same day!

Anywho.

Life Church is going open-source with their resources! Check it out at www.lifechurch.tv/open. I really appreciate their kingdom-mindedness.

Mucho Props!

HA! I was about to ask the same question as Ben. Mark you are the business starter. Maybe you should start a page/ministry where guys could upload their stuff for others to use. We have spent thousands on videos and graphics and it drives me nuts that I use them one series and we are done. I would love to be able to pass them along.

Great thought Gary!

Maybe the Theater Church Forum before the Buzz Conference would be a good "Beta test." It'd be cool for theater churches to share their unique "theater" marketing. But I think there needs to be a place where "open source" churches can share their graphics and videos.

The obvious danger is cloning. But there is also great potential for synergy!

Here is my two cents. A church that is producing videos or graphics are already covering those costs in their budget so why then pass the cost on to small churches that are looking for these things? If a company was started to produce them that is one thing but a church already doing looking to recoop the expenses to me would be better off keeping them to themselves. Open-source church is about kingdom growth because there are a lot of people in all our communittees in need of Jesus. I really dig these conversations and hope one day to be able to share our stuff along with everyone else.

I was getting ready to type the same question. We all should share our stuff.

Seriously, after reading these comments I pulled up our expenses since we started the church. In 19 months we have spent so much money in custom graphics and custom video openers that it is insane. I would love to give these away BUT I don't have time to tell every planter who calls what we have and email them to them. However if we had a place to upload them, I could get that done and people could just download them.

It would almost need to be like sermon central. I hate that place but the fact that you can post your stuff, search by author, topic, etc. is great. If that could be done for our graphics and videos that would be awesome.

Yes, there would be cloning but it is already there anyway. Personally we would probably keep doing custom stuff but it would be cool to let plants that don't have the cash or the designers to be able to do that.

When we first launched, using other people's graphics was the only way we could have that stuff with excellence.

Make it happen, Mark. :)

The Media guy David Russel ought to start a page. This could change everything and could create more "buzz" for NCC or whoever did it.

I had the opportunity to go home this weekend and visit my home church, Life Church! :) And, lucky me, Pastor Craig's book had just been released and so I scooped one up right away! I started reading it on my way back to DC and so far am very impressed! And I had at least 5 different people stop me and ask what I was reading. I think it's because it has a real eye catching design on the front. Something to consider for your book PM. :) I also loved the fact that you are quoted at the beginning of the book!

Joshua,

Definitely a concept that we love and something we'd love to add to.

Mulling over a few things for now. We'll keep you updated here. :)

BTW, just a minor thing--Dave Clark is the Pastor of Media. :)

I am joining the conversation here late, but not the conversation on opensource church. I have been rolling this idea around in my mind for several months and just haven't done anything about it yet. I've finally started a series of posts on my blog (chrismarsden.com)about my thoughts on the open source church and my friend Ben (see above comments) and I had a long offline conversation about this whole thing.

Whether Mark gets this whole thing going or someone else picks it up and runs with it, the cooperation of the Kingdom is obviously past due and the fact that so many of us are talking about it at the same time is not coincidence. God is doing something awesome and however it ends up working out, I'm in.

It strikes me that open source is a bit like really wishing for other people's success. How cool would that be if it really caught on in the body. Promoting someone else - now there's a groovy concept. :)

Appreciate the comments on this one. Things are a little crazy with our coffeehouse opening up and Buzz around the corner, but this is not a huge blip on our radar. I think we want to find a way to turn alot of our stuff in shareware.

It may take a little time, but we're exploring some options!

I'm a big believer in the open source idea and it sounds like a lot of us have been thinking the same thoughts :)
