The Neurology of Faith

I'm fired up about our next sermon series--The Neurology of Faith.

The Great Commandment says, "Love the Lord your God with all of your heart, all of your soul, and all of your mind."

What does it mean to love God with your medial ventral prefrontal cortex?

I know that is a burning question that keeps you up late at night right? Me too!

The series is going to juxtapose neurology and theology. I have this conviction: every ology is a branch of theology. That is based on Romans 1:20. Every branch of science reveals a new dimension of the Creator. So the more we understand the human mind the more we understand the mind of God. And vice verse :)

This series is similar to The Physics of Faith series we did a year ago. And I've got The Mathematics of Faith and The Anatomy of Faith up my sleeve for future years.

So why neurology? I honestly believe that the spiritual battle is won or lost in the mind. Spiritual maturity is mind over matter.

I think this series is going to help people think about everything from obeidience to prayer to sin in new ways! I'm hoping the neurology will stretch our theology and help us appreciate God even more!

You rock! Luv ya. I can't wait for this new series. Hey, I finally bit the bullet and bought an mp3 player. However, it's a Creative Zen vision not an ipod. I'm new to this, is your podcast available on other cast service sites other than itunes? Creative doesn't work w/ itunes, to my knowledge.
Thanks for the time. Looking forward to the new series.

Luis,

Try Juice (http://juicereceiver.sourceforge.net/), an open source podcatcher that should work with your Creative player.

Just add our feed (http://feeds.feedburner.com/TheaterchurchcomPodcast) to the application and the downloads should begin happening.

If Juice is not compatible with Creative, check the documentation that came with your player. There might have been a CD packaged with the player that provides the appropriate software.

Let me know if I can help further: drussell at theaterchurch dot com.

Mark,

First of all, what's up! I haven't talked to you in awhile, but been spying here on what's going on.

Anyway...

You probably already know about this book and have read it, since your a reading-machine, but just in case you haven't...

In a book called "The New Brain: How The Modern Age Is Rewiring Your Brain" Richard Restak says that your brain is plastic. You can teach your brain new tricks, skills, languages, and more with repitition, intention, awareness, and patience.

He says there's a "10 Year Rule" that says that anyone can become a genius - or at least a superior performer - in a niche if they apply themselves in that area for a decade.

Just thought I'd mention it cause it sounds like a book you'd like and could work in this series!

(Disclaimer: I haven't read the book just saw this mentioned on another blog.)

A great verse I've come to rely on in spiritual neurology is 2 Cor 10:5, "Every thought captive unto Christ."

Love that one Cajun :)

I think we tend to focus on the negative side. Take sinful thoughts captive. But I also think it means the positive side. We've got to capture God ideas!
