El Faro

Had dinner with my brother last night. He works for a law firm in Chicago. Talk about perfect timing. It was his birthday! Total blast seeing my three neices. Too cute!

Afterwards I drove to a little hole-in-the-wall in Summit called El Faro--home of the giant burrito. I discovered the place when I was in high school and we used to drive an hour round trip just to get a burrito. Their burritos are so good that I have a friend who drove about four hours round trip from Illinois State in Bloomington, Illinois just to scratch his burrito itch in the middle of the night!

Long live El Faro!

It's actually El-Farol, and I agree that it is the BEST burrito EVER, open 24-7! I hope you snuck one in your carry-on!!!

Wow, that's a strong burrito desire to drive 4 hours RT. The crazy thing is, Mexican food is my favorite food genre so I could see myself doing the same for a scrumptious burrito...actually I have gone 2 hours RT for good Mexican food!

I enjoyed it for several hours after too :)

I just had a delightful thought! I'll be flying into Lexington, KY in a week and driving up through Chicago on my way to Wisconsin the next, I think I will swing into this burrito place if it's not too far out of the way! Can you say, Mapit?!?

Luv your blog. Luv the people who chime in. It's like reading a daily episode of some highly popular twenty-something/thirty-something show. You make me laugh. An internet comic-journal, instead of a comic strip..... I check in when i can in the AM and it's mark & friends in the morning, and in the PM, it's Mark & friends ...later that day.

Californians have been known to drive over 16 hours for In 'n Out Burger ..... back in the day it was only in in So. Cal and the northerns would HAVE to drive that far to get it. My friend's mom used to crave it when pregnant ... they drove 8 hours each way to get the goods.

Robb,

I've called it El Farol since day one, but I actually looked at the sign this time and there was no "l". Any spanish experts who might come to the rescue?

Faro? or Farol?

The $64,000 question.

Mark

I don't know that it matters either way really...El Faro is Spanish for "The Lighthouse" and El Farol is Spanish for "The Lantern".

Let's just call it "The Lighthouse Lantern" :)

Side note....I would tend to go with El Faro because "The Lantern" is also known as "La Linterna" which can even be translated as "The flashlight".... Your call :)

see the link I attached above! How could YAHOO be wrong? I just can't accept El Faro. It would shatter one of the core life experiences that my life is built upon!!! After all, this IS the ORIGINAL giant burritto - - long b/f these imposters of today caught up in the commercial enterprise of it all - - El FaroL refuses to become commercial -- keeping their dirty bathrooms, messy walls, unclean floors, and mispelled signs! EL FAROL FOREVER!!!!

Robb,

I see the link. I've called it El Farol since high school, but I have a picture of the sign :) I'll post it if I have to. I think we're wrong brother. I think we've lived a lie for a long time.

Plus I just had another spanish speaker weigh in on this issue and she said they had pictures of lighthouses inside. Hmmmmm...

The clues seem to be pointing toward El Faro :)

My life is not what I thought it was!!!

If there are any other truths about El Faro that I do not yet know (like wether or not it really is a STEAK burrito, versus another meat form) don't tell me!

Ignorance is bliss :)

By the way, I heard steak and rat have virutally indistinguishable tastes :)

I have been going to "Farol's" since I was 15, that was 1989! It is the basis for my love of Mexican food and Burritos! Everyone in Chicago knows about it, and if you fly into Midway airport, it's not too far down the road!! It is a must for people visiting, and for burrito enthusiasts!

We might have been eating a burrito at the same time :) I found it in 1987 and went off and on till the early 90's!
