Planning Retreat
Long day. Good day.
We put together our 2007 calendar, worked on our annual budget, and put together a preaching calendar for next year. It always feels like my head is spinning after a planning retreat, but I also feel like all this hard work will pay dividends in 2007.
How reactive or proactive we are is one of the best leadership barometers. Definitely feel like this planning retreat gets us in proactive mode. Either we let things happen to us or we make things happen. Really feel like I've got a good handle on everything from our marketing strategy to staffing strategy to sermon strategy.
I feel like putting together a sermon strategy is one of my most difficult and most important responsibilities. Planning the spiritual diet of a congregation is weighty business.
We actually survey our congregation on sermon ideas. Pretty interesting to guage which series NCCers think would be most helpful to their spiritual development. One of the reasons I like surveying the congregation and involving others in the process of sermon planning is that I want to find ways of overcoming my blindspots.
I think we're well on our way to a well-balanced diet for 2007.

Mark,
How do you approach those topics that seem to pop up on the radar in the middle of the year? Do you ever preach anything that you haven't scheduled? I like to plan out the year too;sticking to the plan is another matter.

Carlo,
Great question. We always call audibles. This is our basic game plan and then I'd say about 30% of our series are "audibles at the line of scrimmage" as we sense needs or deficiencies or address issues that are happening at NCC or in culture.
