First Game

I had butterflies in my stomach all day yesterday. And my adrenaline didn't stop pumping till about two hours after the game! Our first game of the season goes in the L column. We lost by two baskets.

The kids were pretty disappointed that we lost but I told them they needed to translate that disappointed into the way they practice next week. We'll also make a few game plan and personnel adjustments. Part of the coach's learning curve.

I think my primary goal as a coach is to try to pull the potential out of these kids. And half the battle is confidence. I try to give a word of encourage to each player after every game so we keep building on strengths.

Till next week!

Words of encouragement? Come on Mark! Laps or suicides are the only way to get kids to listen!

One of the best youth coaches I've ever seen in my life was an encourager. Sadly, my son didn't play for him but I was very impressed with what he could accomplish with the kids (this was baseball, YMMV). I asked one of the parents his secret, he told me that after every game he sends a note to each of his kids. In the note he glowingly tells them all the good things they did during the game, even if it was only encouraging the rest of the team, then includes one thing they can work on for the next game.

Not saying you need to do all that, just letting you know I think you are on the right track. Wish I'd had a coach like that.
