MLK Day
Just thought I'd post my favorite Martin Luther King Jr. quote in honor of MLK day:
If a man is called to be a street sweeper he should sweep streets even as Michelangelo painted, or Beethoven composed music, or Shakespeare wrote poetry. He should sweep streets so well that all the hosts of heaven and earth will pause to say, "There lived a great street sweeper who did his job well."

Hey Mark...great MLK quote..
had a questions, as a leader, how do categorize "callings" on your church apart from simply what you would deem a prayed through strategic decision.
reading below, on the vision interchange when you talked about your church being "called" to be multi-campus...are all your decisions "callings" or not or how do you draw that line?
in general, "calling" seems to carry a more mystical / spiritual weight as opposed to a decision which seems to not carry as much weight...maybe it shouldn't
how do you distinguish between the two, if at all
been chewing on that...your thoughts?

re:MLK quotes.
I don't remember the actual source, but I wrote down this great MLK quote years ago: "You must first love those you wish to change." This was reported to be part of his response to those who wanted him to pursue a more aggressive and even violent approach to change.
John,
Such a great question. Really tough to discern between a "good idea" and a "God idea." I think part of it is contextual evidence if you will. For example, I had a pretty dramatic vision of a metto map and NCC meeting in movie theaters @ metro stops throughout the DC area. That tends toward the "calling" end of the spectrum. It's not just a strategic decisions although I think that would be fine too :) Just more conviction behind it.
We feel "called" to be a teaching church. I think part of why I feel like it's a calling is because of the way God is given us a platform and networked us in such sovereign ways. So what is good stewardship--sharing our best practices and lessons learned--carries more weight.
Hope that helps some. This is really a discernment issues.
Leaders need to know where a vision is at on this spectrum between good idea and God idea.
My two cents,
Mark
