Writing Update

Some days I hit a wall. And some days I hit a stride. I've got two chapters to go on the rough draft for right-brain leadership. Really appreciate the team of people surrounding this book with prayer!

For what it's worth, I need to be reading while I'm writing. Reading stimulates my writing just like reading stimulates my preaching. I'm reading two books right now.

I'm loving Made to Stick. This is going to be a classic like the Tipping Point. A must-read.

I'm also reading Gilead by MariLynne Robinson. I rarely read fiction. I'm too pragmatic :) But I heard Donald Miller recommend this book so I picked up a copy. One statement in the book was worth the buy:

For me, writing has always felt like praying.

Great description!

I feel like I'm praying for people when they read what I wrote!

You've read the Narnia Series? Lord of the Rings? Please tell me you have wondered into Narnia and Middle earth sometime in your life. If you have not, I highly recommend you go visit.

I'm not into fiction either. I've never read Lord of the Rings - I guess I haven't been to middle earth, I prefer the surface.

Anyway, I am reading "Integrity" by Dr. Henry Cloud right now. It is a great leadership/character book. I highly recommend it!

Sad, sad, the surface is just that-just the surface...

Gilead is an amazing book. Every single sentence is beautifully written.

Made To Stick. I saw it yesterday at Barnes and Noble and wrote down the back cover concepts cuz I thought it was soooo good. Simplicity. Unexpectedness. Concreteness. Crediblity. Emotional.
Stories. I guess now I have to buy it based on your recommendation. btw mark, im enjoying your blog.

Just finishing Made to Stick today. Loved it. Especially enjoyed the "Sinatra Test." Usable material in a "sticky" format! Praying for your rally tomorrow in Atlanta.

I love the whole "reading stimulates writing" concept. That is definitely true for me in journaling as well as blogging. By the way, your book and blog have provided some of my sources of inspiration during those dry spells. Thank you.

Gilead is a phenomenal read. Just reading it was an experience of grace for me. The writing was that beautiful.

Too bad your "too pragmatic" to read fiction. :-)
Fiction, while I don't read it all the time, is the only way I know to see and hear truth lived out in relationships and situations. I always see a bit of myself.

A good fictional series: The Starbridge series by Susan Howatch. I don't know of anything that digs deeper into the soul of a minister. A bit racy at times, but worth the read. The first and last are the best in the series.

Hope this doesn't come across as pedantic. Your phrase just piqued my attention.
Love reading your blog. Keep up the blogging...
peace.

Since you need to be "reading while you're writing" Seth Godin touches on right brain communication in a repost today on powerpoint presentations. Thought it might inspire you blogger to blogger about communication being related to transmitting emotion over facts. Not to imply that you need any help in that area of course. :-)
