What Magazines Do You Read?

I think magazines are a great form of cultural exegesis. Over the years, I've read a variety of magazines--everything from How to Mental Floss to Fast Company. And, of course, I love ministry magazines like Leadership Journal, Rev, Outreach, Relevant Leader, and Ministry Today.

Just curious. Anybody got any magazine recommendations? Always looking for a good read that stretches me or helps me keep a pulse on culture.

Here's a few I read:

Wired (of course), Paste (redemptive culture mag), Good ("secular" redeeming things), Fast Company, Business 2.0, Fortune, and Relevant.

I also love Fast Company and Wired.

I also love Outside - it has that spirit of adventure to it.

Though it doesn't look cool, there's a magazine called Mission Frontiers that usually has some interesting trends happening around the world.

I'll second Business 2.0 and add Popular Science and Popular Mechanics. Both get me thinking, and Popular Mechanics makes me more useful in a day to day sense.

There's a wealth of free information at digital magazines like Smashing and UX. Those are design-centric, but there seems to be a trend for old media finding a new outlet online.

I haven't heard of several of the others mentioned here. Should be fun to track these down at Barnes. :)

I second the Dwell mention.

Ready Made, Make.
Two magazines where crafts, technology and ingenuity meet.

If you like How (great design mag) you've probably also picked up I.D.

Picking up magazines when you're traveling to a foreign country allows you to have a small "time capsule" to capture the feel of that place at the moment you visited it.

It is also just fun to have magazines in languages you can't read... it forces you to look at the information completely differently. Like a child searching for those few words he or she can recognize and read.

Another one to add to this great list is a new one that just came out with it's first issue: "Emerging Pastor". Obviously because it is new I don't have a ton to go off of yet.

I tried to resist, but I am going to give in and add a plug for any Mac mag out there.

Tell Chris Jarrell that Todd from JCC gives a shout out to him.

National Geographic and Smithsonian - Neither are the latest US cultural trends, but both share worldview perspectives with a sense of history - adventure, travel, adventure.

PM - I agree with all the Wired recommendations - I think you'd enjoy that. I wonder if you'd like Entertainment Weekly - especially their weekly 'Must List' - there's a ton of cultural info there, since they over movies, tv, music and books.

hey Pastor Mark,
i'm probably not breaking any new ground with these suggestions…
but in terms of magazines that have a pulse on current events/culture, my two favorites are “The New Yorker” and “The Economist” – both of which provide a fair amount of their material for free on their respective web sites…
“The New York Times Magazine” is also generally a very good read each week and tends to report on pretty pertinent topics…
as for more spirituality-based publications, i’m a big fan of “Christianity Today” – especially their music section…
hope you find any of these resources helpful…
David
p.s. i figured that suggesting “Sports Illustrated” and “ESPN The Magazine” wouldn’t be all that helpful…

Hey, this is Chris from Ministry Today. Thanks for the shout-out!

We discovered a great new edgy Christian magazine called Salvo the other day. Really good writing and some HILARIOUS fake ads.

I've been reading FC since the 12th vol. I too read How (design), Wired tech culture), Entertainment (pop culture) the Economist (world news), and Time (US news). My guilty pleasures are Sports Illustrated, Smithsonian, Sole Collector (feed my x-hoopster shoe habit) and the grand-daddy Reader's Digest.

I'm a 4square pastor in the OC and a friend of Brad Abare's. Would love to touch base if you find yourself in SoCA.
