Learning how to ride a bike

Bookmark and Share

I got the workout of my life last night trying to teach Josiah how to ride a bike! I must have run behind his bike, sort of straddling it, for at least half a mile. He did his first solo flight of about twenty-five yards, but I ran behind him the entire time because he's very dangerous right now! Sometimes he panics and instead of hitting the brake he'll take both feet off the pedals and go crashing into the fence at full speed spread eagle.

There is something so exhillirating about seeing your kids learn how to bike. You can see the freedom, accomplishment and joy in their eyes!

Enjoying the simple pleasures!

Hey Mark,

Good luck with the bike teaching. One thing that I learned with my girls that really did the trick. Take the pedals off, lower the seat and let him learn how to push with both feet, lift his feet, and coast. Once he can coast for a few yards, he will have the balance issue down. Then put the pedals back on and he will ride away into the sunset! With my two girls it took about two hours or less and they were off.

Mark,

Be sure to get you kids on those Razor scooters first if you can. They learn the basics of balance and when you are half an inch off the ground it doesn't hurt so bad.

My 2 younger kids learned to ride bikes after the scooter craze and it was amazing, one time and they were off riding. The older kids were a little more work.
