We picked up a Shichon puppy in Breezewood, PA, on the way back to DC today. Awfully cute and pretty calm! But it was really wierd--we couldn't get him to walk. I don't think he's ever been on a leash and we're not sure what to do. Where is Cesar Millan when you need him? I'm definitely not a Dog Whisperer.

Please provide the name of the kennel.....you could have purchased a puppy mill puppy; PA isn't the Puppy Mill Capital of the East for nothing!
Anon,
Mickey is doing better :)
Actually got him to walk around the block this morning! I think he's making the adjustment. Getting used to his new urban hood!

Mark,
here's something that has worked with our new puppy. take treats with you, if your pooch refuses to walk, don't go to him. walk so the leash is taught and make sure he comes to you, bribe him with a treat and when he does come, reward him. AFter a bit, you won't have to bribe anymore. Also, NEVER walk your dog with those adjustable leash things everyone seems to have. It does not teach your dog to walk and does not set a consistent limit. Use a standard 6 foot leash.
my 2 cents,
erik
