Sprint Triathlon

It's t-minus three weeks till my first sprint triathlon. I've been training since June, but I'm trying to do more bricks as I approach the event. Swimming a 1/2 mile or biking 7.2 miles or running 3.1 isn't that difficult. The challenge is doing them back-to-back.

I've been doing quite a few bike and run bricks, but I did my first triple yesterday. I feel good about my times, but I'm a little concerned about going from a pool to the ocean! Very different ball game. And most of my bike training has been on a stationary bike.

My base line goal is to finish in 1:15. My big, hairy, audacious goal is to finish in 1:07. I'd definitely have to be hitting on all eight-cylinders. This is my first triathlon so I have no idea what to expect. I do know the adrenaline will be pumping!

All the best to you. I was excited to hear you're racing. I realized the personality of church planters requires big goals. I'm in the same boat and will be racing in my first race in 3 weeks. Hopefully we'll both cross the finish line with some energy left to preach on Sunday.

What race? I'm doing the Dewey Beach Triathlon. It's right by Rehoboth Beach where we vacation every summer.

Trying to get into the Nation's Tri in DC? If no spot opens, I'll do the General Smallwood Tri down in Marbury, MD. Little nervous, but the training and anticipation is exciting.

Hi!

New arrival to your blog (minutes ago). I was just hearing today on the radio about the Ottawa, Canada (where I live) Ironman Triathlon happening this weekend. Your tri sounds more more reasonable! May you get your best time.

Random triathlon advice from a fellow Pastor/Author/Triathlete.

You didn't ask, but here you go anyway. :)

1. Set up your transition area in your room the night before the race (after picking up your packet with your #). Use a small towel to mark your space underneath your bike. Lay everything out in the order you'll use it. Doing it the night before ensures you're not forgetting anything.
2. Unless you are a swimming stud, do not start at the front of the swim or you'll spend the first few minutes of the swim trying to keep from drowning as your competitors swim over you. You'll be nervous your first race, so I'd recommend starting in the middle to back and let the race come to you.
3. Invest $5 in a race belt for your number. This attaches your number to your waist. You attach your number to your belt and your belt to your waste, tuck it into your tri shorts, pull it out as you get off your bike, and you're set.
4. When you get to the transition area, make a visual note of the bike and run exits.
5. Find a way to identify your bike location (i.e. "on the rack by the tree", "next to the racer who tied an orange helium balloon next to his bike", etc). You'll be tired coming out of the water and--trust me--you may have a hard time finding your bike if you didn't make a mental note of where you racked it.
6. Thank the race volunteers as you pass. This always helps me to remember to have fun and enjoy the journey.
7. Put a roll of toilet paper in your back-pack for before the race. You'll understand. Trust me. :)

Interested to hear how your first tri went. I did my first 14 months ago and magaged to finish an ironman in July (ironman lessons - vanpay.wordpress.com). I learned a lot that is going to help me plant a church in Feb, with the time it took to train for the beast...i imagine that i'm one and done.
