Screen on the Green

We've got screen on the green this weekend--a double feature!

We're showing the movie Cars at Lincoln Park on Capitol Hill on Friday, September 21 @ 7 PM. The second showing is at Bluemont Park in Arlington, VA on Saturday, September 22 @ 7 PM. It's one way we try to bring the community together and be a blessing. Plus it fits with our movie theater motif.

One of the highlights of our family summer vacation was taking our beach chairs and going to a screen on the green movie in Lewes, DE. They showed the all-time classic--Princess Bride. What a blast hanging out with the family, eating popcorn, and enjoying a good movie.

By the way, whatever happened to drive-in movie theaters? Those were awesome!

Drive-ins are awesome. Surround sound and now HD put a challenge on them. The last few Thanksgivings our family has made the journey from Phoenix to Tucson to eat Thanksgiving dinner with some relatives. When it gets dark, we head for one of the last drive-ins around and watch the new release (last year ‘Casino Royale’). We get the lawn chairs, blankets and portable heaters (for the wimps) and enjoy the double feature.

Just come back to Minnesota! We have quite a few drive in theaters. I think there are 3 different ones within a 20 minute drive of where I live in St. Paul!

Just wondering what the legal issues are in showing a movie in public? I'd love to do this but I thought that FBI warning at the front said for home viewing only...

On a long motorcycle ride last Saturday, I found a real working drive in about 2 hours north east of Des Moines IA. Go figure right out in the middle of nowhere!

If you had more time when you come to Iowa next week...

Chris,

You need a license. I forget the name of it. Might be MPLI.

Mark-

One Summer evening pack up the family and head out to Stephen's City, Virginia. The Family Drive In is a classic slice of Americana and you can get there from DC in a little over an hour.

Just curious, but what are you hoping the community will get from the church hosting this particular movie? Don't get me wrong, my family and I thought that it was a great film, and I want to know how you are using it in reaching the unsaved.

I LOVE these - what a way to bless the community in a non-threatening, non-Jesus Freak way. (Although there is nothing wrong with a JF!).

CS,

I think it's a way to bring our community together. I think of it as a touchpoint. Over the years we've seen lots of people come to our outreaches--Easter Eggstravaganza, Live Nativity, Screen on the Green--and then take the next step and come to church.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the reply. I am still left with a couple of questions. You said, "I think [the movie is] a way to bring our community together. I think of it as a touchpoint." Many other secular groups such as Rotary Clubs, Boy Scouts, and high schools do these sorts of things, too, to have some friendship and interaction.

What differentiates your church when you do the same? Do people also get presented with the Gospel message during these times? Do they want to come to your church because they get exposed to the concepts such as sin, grace, repentance, and salvation, or is it because they perceive what you are doing as being "fun" with Pixar films?

CS,

The big difference between us and the Boy Scouts is that when they come to NCC they will hear the gospel. And we don't do soap box derby thing they do in Boy Scouts :)

Here is a way of thinking of it. Just as Levi threw a party for his tax collector friends and Jesus attended...think of screen on the green as a party for our community. Several hundred people came to each. Some of them will come to church. And hopefully some of them will come to Christ.

Seems like you might be more wired toward "an evangelistic crusade" approach to evangelism. And I think that can be effective. But I also try to do events that are relational and sequential. If we keep blessing our community I think we'll have opportunity to share the gospel with them. We want to win friends not just arguments. And there were lots of smiles, laughs, and fellowship at the movies!

Hope that helps explain.

That is a good explanation. I have seen many churches in recent years put on events in relatively secular circles without any inclination towards our faith. So while they develop relationships and are present in the public eye, the Gospel, the core of our beliefs, never comes up. They keep the "fun" present in the hopes that it would be a hook for people to come to church, but no one ever does because they don't understand their own separation from God.

I do not favor the efficacy of the "evangelistic crusade" method of reaching the lost over general public interactions, but detest those places where the only difference between a church and another organization participating in something is just the name on the form.

Should you guys ever decide to make a soapbox derby, though, do post it on your blog. That would be amusing.
