Weekend Reflections

Bookmark and Share

Had a great weekend at NCC.

Like most churches, lots of people travel on labor day weekend. Plus we had a couples retreat this weekend. But it was great to have some college students back!

My message was from John 13 and we challenged NCCers to throw in the towel--get plugged into an NCC ministry. In keeping with the theme, we also gave every NCCer a hand towel on the way out as a visceral reminder that we're called to serve.

As part of the message, we showed a video of the Uganda trip. Pretty amazing to see the team, the orphanage that they built, and the kids lives who will be impacted because of it. And it made for a great point: you don't have to go to Uganda to serve!

Throw in the towel!

Just thinking that throw in the towel generally refers to giving up or forfeiting a fight. I am curious as to how you related this to serving?

Adam,

Four posts down Pastor Mark talks about the answer to this question. He references Jesus washing the disciples' feet and how he wants to turn the phrase- throw in the towel- "on its head". I'm sure he will respond if you have further questions.

we did this once at a worship i led...even included a foot washing as part of our prayer time. at the end of worship, i had everyone hold their towels over their heads and swing them around as we did our blessing and sending. just like what you see at football stadiums and basketball arenas where thousands of people swing their towels to cheer on the team. very great effect, but more importantly people made the connection to getting their lives dirty through the lives of others.

Just a note...Thanks so much for the book "In a Pit..." My son is 12 and he and I are reading it together at an opportune time when his faith is challenged by friends and girls no longer "have cooties". It's created a great bonding time for he and I and given us alot of things to talk about before bed. In short, it's helping to bring us closer at an important time...

We just did the same thing at our church (www.vc.tv) about a month and a half ago. Our pastor held an order of the towel service and gave everyone hand towels with the title printed on it. The whole thing was designed to get people volunteering and serving.
