Trick or Treat

Had a blast trick-or-treating with the kids last night. And there is a cool Capitol Hill tradition--thousands of people converge on East Capitol Street between Lincoln Park and the Capitol. In fact, we have friends that live on East Capitol and they said they bought 1500 pieces of candy last year and ran out so they got 2000 pieces this year!

This year we had a football fan, cowboy, and Christine from Phantom of the Opera.

Good times!

I saw you on E. Cap. last night! I was going to come up and say something to you! I figure after the 'skins performance on Sunday, if you were going to wear a redskins jersey...you would have to wear a joker hat with it!!!
Don't you love the traditions on the Hill? What a great atmosphere!

Hi Mark, I'm from the UK, been following your podcasts for ages, totally love em. Any way, I wanted to ask what your opinion is on Halloween seeing that you take your kids trick-or-treating. Considering what Halloween is about, it's focus and its occult and pagan origins. do you think it is something Christians should really be supporting?

I think it is quite different in America, than here in the UK, I don't know but it seems that people tend to take it more "seriously" here and we have a greater number of older teenagers involved in the trick side of things.

Rich,

I understand why some people boycott Halloween because of it's associations. I sort of take a simple approach. Kids love to dress up in costumes and get candy :) We sort of leave it at that.

I can understand where Rich is coming from because I used to feel that way. What changed my view was the fact that Christians can find something wrong with anything. Why not turn the devil's holiday around and take it back. Our church sponsors a "Trunk or Treat" and the kids from the neighborhood come through and get prepackaged bags of candy with note cards about our kids ministries. We also get an opportunity to talk to parents and engage people who never have been inside a church. If you never go to the lake, you'll never catch any fish!

So that's why I couldn't find a parking spot!
