Offsite Sermons
I've always believed that anytime you can preach anywhere besides behind the pulpit you need to do it. Jesus rarely preached in the synagogue. He preached on mountains and beaches. And he used roman coins and little children as sermon props. The reason we don't do more offsite or on location sermons is simply because it takes more time and energy. Creativity is hard work. It takes extra effort.
Long story short, we are experimenting with an offsite sermon next weekend. I'll actually be in Utah. But we're shooting and editing the video before I leave. I'm hoping the change of scenery actually supplements the message and makes it more powerful. It definitely requires more work, but we want to see how to it flies.
Everything is an experiment! If you want to see how the experiment turns out, you can watch the webcast next week.

We shoot and edit a 25-30 minute "teaching film" offsite every single week. That is what's shown in our 3 locations, and then the campus pastor does a 10 minute challenge. Yes - it is a TON of work!

Thanks for the input Mark and Scott, after talking to Don Miller and Tracy Groot, I was encouraged to send a query letter to their agent and I'm waiting to hear back. I had one publisher offer me a contract but a friend of mine, who works as a buyer for Family Christian book stores, highly suggested to not go with the particular publisher due to their horrible reputation with retailers. I work as family ministries pastor for a church plant in Muskegon, Michigan and so my pay doesn't even consistently put food on the table for my family. This reality keeps me from having any money to invest in writing conferences (thanks for the suggestion Scott, the conference looks great) or any self promotion. I know my book will be so encouraging and impacting to those who come from a broken home, as well young men looking to be great dads and the women who desire their husbands to be great dads. Just looking for contacts and help in the process, without slipping even more below the poverty level.
we did that a few months back when our pastor knew he'd be out of town on that sunday. shot it in a few "locations" - it went over very well.
Hey David,
Great stuff. Love the creativity!

The fifth Sunday of this past December we actually all just lived out the previous four messages. rather than a regular gathering, we met out front, prayed, and then took a handful of servant opportunities in our community and practiced what we'd been preaching. We sent people off in families and small groups and served and shared all throughout our community. The series was called Christmas Presence, which walked through Jesus' presence on earth, the Holy Spirit's presence in us, and then our presence in the community. Communicated it, then stepped out and did it!! we got together afterwards for lunch and story telling from serving. We had 50 people participate, so it was pretty sweet!
Forget the experiment. Preach in person next time. We love you and creativity can go only so far. Stay with us!!
Matt,
I couldn't be there so we decided to turn it into an experiment we've wanted to try for quite some time. We definitely process all of the feedback!
I love preaching in person too :)
Mark
