Tax Time

Decided to do our taxes early this year. Yes, early means April 14. I have this weird idiosyncrasy: I feel bad if I'm too early with some things. I feel that way if I'm flying. Good stewardship is getting to the gate right as they call my boarding group. I feel that way with preaching. I can never finish sermon prep until the day of. It doesn't matter how much I've studied or prepared, I've got to continue fine tuning until the last minute! Same with taxes. I always end up getting them done just in time! That way it's a rush of adrenaline. Not really. But sort of.

For what it's worth, Lora is the one who manages our budget and checkbook. But for some strange reason, I really enjoy doing taxes. It's sort of like an annual puzzle that I try to figure out. Of course, while I'm doing them I keep asking myself: why do I like doing this again?

I hear that taxes are a lot like marriage. Who am I to question another methodology? Good luck the taxes, brother.

Nice to hear about another "last second sermon-prepper". I was at Awaken and saw you fine tuning mere minutes before your teaching. How comforting.

findservelove,

I think my challenge is over-prepping, if that's possible. I'm prepping for sermons months, weeks, and days in advance. I just can't quit prepping. It's this compulsive sense that I need to use every minute right up to the last minute to make sure it's exactly what I want it to be :)

I often refer to this over-prepping as "getting lost in the preaching forest." I get so far into it that sometimes I forget the way out.

I always feel guilty, like I'm procrastinating or something when I work on anything up until the last minute. But when it comes to messages or major events, I can be prepared to the gills, but I still have to put the finishing touches on it, and I've had several people and 'leaders" reprimand me! So nice to hear I'm not alone!!!

I was just taking a break from our taxes to read some blogs and clear my head before the final stretch to file them. Thanks for the encouragement!

PM,

One word....

Accountant.

My CPA is a God send. If it weren't for her, I'd start on my taxes on Jan. 1 and probably not finish till sometime in the summer. Taxes are one puzzle I'd rather not attempt alone. I give her the pieces and say, "Have fun! Tell me what I owe in a few weeks."

Pastor Mark and fellow Nccer's,
Well I did it. I have made reservations to come and visit y'all the first weekend of June. I am looking forward to attending a service at Ebenzers that Saturday night.

For years, deliver my taxes to the Naperville Post Office at about 11:50 pm on the 15th, though this year was an hour early. Do get them finished in March.

there have been numerous Sunday mornings driving to worhip that I will have a "sermon illustration" moment. That drive time with my two boys is truly priceless...
