I've referenced it a couple time so I thought I'd blog about it. In a couple weeks I'll take our entire staff off-site for a daydream day. We'll rent space at the National Cathedral--very cool place to pray, meditate, dream, and hang out. Plus I love the observatory. One of the best views of the city. We actually went their before launching our second campus so it's one of the places we go to dream.
I have a simple formula: change of pace + change of place = change of perspective. I've been concerned lately about lack of clear vision. I never want us to go through the motions. So our entire team is reading Making Vision Stick and I'm asking everybody on our team to rethink what they do. I want to make sure we're doing ministry out of imagination. And I'm really seeking God for more clarity.
One of the things that inspired me was the way Starbucks closed-up shop to do some retraining a few months ago. In the same spirit, we'll close up shop for a day to make sure we're going after God-ordained and God-sized dreams. By the way, I planned it for the day after The Whiteboard Sessions. So I think we'll have lots of energy and vision coming off that conference experience.

Dude,
I love this idea. I'm sharing it with my staff. We're due for a daydreaming day away.

k I've been a lead pastor before but a year ago I took a position as students pastor how can I implement this concept
Greenmonkey,
I think you do the same thing. You take your key leaders away for a day to dream about the future of the ministry. Go somewhere cool or scenic--but it needs to be away from the whitenoise. Give them a book to chew on beforehand. And encourage them to think outside the box.
My two cents,
Mark
PM I love how committed you are to making sure that you and the rest of the church staff are always on your toes and chasing after what God wants. I think the worst thing that can happen to any organization is complacency. That's particularly true for church.
So keep doing what you're doing to chase those God ideas!
That is such a good idea. What is it that hits you when you feel like you are doing things just out of motion?
I think they reason behind this is some Holy Discontent. I think it's the Holy Spirit churning or stirring my spirit.

Pastor Mark - Just a note to let your team know you will be in my prayers for your God-sized dream day.
On Sunday, as you talked about your conviction of adding to the Church DAILY, I daydreamed of a potential opportunity for Ebenezers. It God-incidentally coincides to your Saddleback trip. I once served on the Purpose Driven team for Celebrate Recovery (CR). There has yet to be a Celebrate Recovery in the District. I thought Ebenezer's location would be ideal for a potential recovery worship event one night per week, and before-work or lunchtime Christ-centered twelve step meetings during the weekdays.
Just one girl's daydream ...
Expecting God's best for NCC!

Kaisha,
Love this daydream! Let's pray about it and see if it's something God wants to happen at Ebz!
