One of My Life Goals
Had a conversation today with Jon Gordon. Jon is the author of several books including The Energy Bus and the soon-to-be-released The No Complaining Rule. He is currently working on a fable and one of the characters in the book is a pastor in Washington, DC. So we've been dialogging back and forth about that.
Jon recently read In a Pit with a Lion on a Snowy Day and he said something that reignited one of my crazier dreams. As he was reading the first chapter he said he thought to himself: this has to be made into a movie. I needed to hear that from a third party. As I was writing In a Pit I remember thinking that the story of Benaiah would make an amazing epic film. It has a Gladiator or Braveheart feel to it. Plenty of creative content to work with. And it's a redeeming story with a good ending.
Long story short, one of my life goals is to make a movie. I put my faith in Christ after watching a movie called The Hiding Place so I've always been passionate about that medium. I have no idea how it's going to happen. I have no idea what role I'd play. But I think my best bet is one of my books turning into a movie script.
To be perfectly honest, I feel a little awkward posting this kind of blog. It's one of my life goals that is really out of my control. It would take some divine networking and divine intervention. But I do believe it's a God-ordained passion. So while I have no idea how or when it could happen, I honestly think it will. And when it does, I want to give God all of the credit. For me, blogging is a form of faith. It's one way I put prayer requests and personal goals into writing so I have a record of them.

That's awesome! I just think its amazing that you're willing to put such a daunting dream out there. The venerability is what keeps me reading the blog.
Venerability and Vulnerability with the epic trivia question: Will there be a scene of Pastor Mark chasing geese in the DC Anacostia River once again ... and a guest appearance by the National Park Service Police this time? Cast the vision: Praying that this movie will become a reality!
That would be soooo amazing! I agree that it is a powerful faith statement to "put that out there" for the world to see but as our good friend James says, "We have not because we ask not." I have found, also, that when something you've not spoken of gets confirmed over and over, it's not you, it's God.
I think it would make a cool movie.
If Donald Miller can turn "Blue Like Jazz" into a movie, you can turn "In a Pit" into one.

from reading your blog for awhile, i know you've caught flack in the past from people, yet you continue to be vulnerable and open. you continue to share your dreams and allow others to see your faith. thanks for the long distance discipleship, i appreciate it.

Interesting that you mention the Hiding Place. For some odd reason that is the movie that got me interested in making movies and stuff in the first place. But I ended up working in video and doing mostly corporate or religious stuff for decades and have never made it into movies either - except for one brief stint as a grip on a "B" movie back in the mid-70s.
My point here is I share your goal. Maybe our paths will cross someday when you visit Springfield MO again and we can share goals together!

You ought to consider contacting City on a Hill Productions (www.cityonahillproductions.com) - they are an incredible film making company. In fact, I have a friend who is moving to KY to work full time for them next month! I think I will send her a link to your post! :)
