Man vs. Wild
Parker and I decided to hike the Canyon from north rim to south rim. We're pretty pumped about the challenge!
We'll head down the 14.2 mile North Kaibab Trail early Wednesday morning. Camp at the base of the canyon near Phantom Ranch. Then we'll hike out the next day on the 7.2 mile South Kaibab trail. It'll be a one mile change in elevation when everything is said and done.
Forecast temperature? 112 degrees!
If I get cell phone reception I'll twitter updates.

Good luck! Let us know if you run into folks from the Havasupai Tribe. They live at the bottom of the canyon. I spent a summer ministering to some of their children at a summer camp many years ago.

i've heard the toughest of tough take the helicopter out the next day. i'll be SUPER impressed if you guys hike both directions!!!
Did that trek in 1980 when I was young and much more fit. Great adventure. Camping at bottom along the river is amazing. Trip down is much much easier than trip up. Back light! Much water!!!
Next year - Mall of America! End to End in 2 days!

Hey Mark,
I hope Parker and you have a great time with the rim-to-rim. When I was at the Canyon two years ago I did the slightly tougher South to North Rim hike. It was a blast.
While you're at the canyon, if you have a chance, you should visit the A Christian Ministry in the National Parks (ACMNP) services. I am a member of the ACMNP team in Acadia National Park this summer in Maine and I served on the team two summers ago at the Canyon. They do a sunset service every night on the rim as well as six services on Sunday mornings. The sunset services are held at the rim worship site just outside the South Rim village. If you go to the Hermits Rest bus stop in the village, continue walking along the rim path away from the village for 300 yards and you'll see the altar of the rim sight. We always love when pastors come and visit our services.
I hope your GC experience is wonderful - it's truly is a majestic part of God's creation.
In Christ's Love,
Aaron
