I recently told my kids that if they simply learn to genuinely say please and thank you it'll get them further ahead in life than just about anything else. Then I read an interesting article in Fast Company that touched on the thank-you scarcity in our culture. We don't say "thank you" as often as we ought to.
In her book, The How of Happiness, Sonja Lyubomirsky explores a dozen scientifically proven strategies to make you happier. The first? Expressing gratitude. I try to start my day with my gratitude journal. Honestly, it determines what kind of day I'm going to have regardless of what happens that day, good or bad.
Say thank you to someone for something everyday and you'll be much happier. And start by thanking God for His mercies that are new every morning!

thanks for the reminder...I'm guessing you'll get a lot of these.
I always find that if I talk about Heb. 3:13 or 10:24 on stage - I get a lot more people encouraging me after. It's kind of fun.
anyhow, it was a point well made
I think you are absolutely correct that society doesn't express gratitude as often as they should. I don't think they are necessarily ungrateful, but to say thank you is to be, in part, humble. In this day that is wrongfully perceived as a weakness.
Nice post! :)
Pastor Mark,
Thank you for every inspiring and encouraging post you put in this blog.
Thank you for the weekly evotional that comes to my inbox.
Thank you for coaching and equipping me every week at Church through your sermon.
You are SO right. I'm an illusionist, and I'm shocked at the responses I get to note cards. After every event, or even just random times that I'm grateful for something, I take the time to sit down and personally send a hand-written thank you note to the churches, promoters, and organizations who book us. It's something my parents taught me to do when I was just a kid, and it just sort of stuck. And now that I've grown up, I'm finding out more and more just how rare it really is...
Thank you Mark for being an amazing pastor and all your writing in books and online. It has helped me a lot and I've never even met you, as I am currently in Dallas.
