The Day the Lights Went Out in Wittenberg

I'm been marveling at European design and engineering since we flew threw thru Zurich this week. Man, love so many design features. You can flush the toilet with your foot. Pretty cool. And they have these energy-conserving motion detectors that control the lights in bathrooms. But here's the deal. If someone is in the stall for any length of time and no one else comes into the bathroom, the lights go out. I know this because I was in the stall doing a little light reading when the lights went out. Pitch black. I was waving my arms like a maniac to trigger the motion detectors, but I was in the enclosed stall so no luck. Fortunately, someone walked into the bathroom a few minutes later and triggered the lights. But then I was little too self-conscious to come out because it seemed sort of weird.

One of many memorable Wittenberg moments.

Hope that isn't too much information. Just keeping it real.

Mark,
I have those motion sensor lights also at my work. They are set to go off after 10 minutes. I just cannot finish up business and do the necessary "paperwork" in 10 minutes!

Sounds like something that could happen to me. Pretty funny stuff.

That happens to me all the time at my church. Throwing a book never seems to help. I guess it isn't big enough to trigger the sensor.

lol, who knew energy conservation could be so humorous!? :)

As an expat, I've come across some pretty mmm interesting toilets over the years, but none beat the ones here in Aussie. A pubic toilet in the city has motion detectors as well as an automatic cleaning shower spray that goes off at regular intervals depending on well - use. But my favorite feature is that the toilet will NOT flush until you have washed your hands! Surely a mother invented the thing! lol Have fun in Germany.

I thought the lights in the cases in the freezer section at the Walmart Super Center were failing until I noticed the little web-cam looking thingies above the freezer doors. Then I realized they were using motion-triggered lights (which not only cuts their energy bill by keeping the lights off when not needed, but keepnig the lights off keeps the colling system in the case from having to work as much -- double savings!)
