One of the things God did in my heart during Catalyst was remind me that I need to start my day with worship. So many of us start Sunday with worship. Why not Wednesday? Or Saturday? Verily, even Monday?
So here is what I'm doing. I'm creating another worship playlist on my iPod. And I'm going to surround myself with some songs that wake up my spirit each day. For what it's worth, I think we need two wake up calls every day. Whenever I have an early trip or important meeting I try to set two alarms. That insures that I'll wake up. We need two alarms each day. A physical alarm and a spiritual alarm. We need to wake up our bodies. And we need to wake up our spirits. Too many of us let our spirits sleep Monday to Saturday.
So here's an idea. Why not create a worship playlist for your commute to work or work out at the gym or early morning office routine. We need those songs to saturate our spirits.
For what it's worth, my favorite Catalyst song was God in this City by Chris Tomlin. Really got into my spirit.

Great point. I find myself always tending more toward the pragmatic aspect of ministry that I'm always trying to force myself back into more "spiritual" aspects of life which fuel every other aspect.
Right now, I Heart Revolution disc two by Hillsong and Arize Live by Jon Owens are the worship CDs that are buzzing for me...
Hey PM,
You know I LOVE worship- some awesome tunes for me- the entire Israel Houghton "A Deeper Level" album, Clinging to the Cross by Tim Hughes, and anything by Jonathan Stockstill- Deluge or Bethany Live (a lil' Gospel coming at you)!
I'm a worshipper at heart! My pastor is worship leader William Murphy so I love all of his music. Listen to Let it Rise, Praise is What I Do or The Sound. They get my morning going!! I also love Jonathon Stockstill and Dave and Nicole Binion. Their latest Marvelous Light is amazing!
already made!
by the way, my li'l wife and i loved hearing you at the catalyst labs.
we love what you're doing in dc, but are especially grateful that you write books that help share your insights with the rest of us!
Great call, I've done that for years and its been one of the best things for me in my daily devotional life.
Thanks for the encouragement. We do this with the fam before I leave. We have some faves and the kids get to help choose, and suddenly our bedroom is transformed into a sanctuary! Pretty awesome!
Mark, have you heard the story behind "God of This City"? It was actually written by Bluetree, a band from Ireland, while in Thailand. Chris Tomlin talks about it at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Co-RP2isqZY&feature=related.
Do you mind sharing your worship playlist? Thanks.
Great idea Mark. My boss got me hooked on this for travel by always starting our day with a Hillsong Live DVD on our laptops when we were on the road. We've transfered the idea to the living room now and run it off our mac mini onto our flatscreen.
Nothing will get you running like watching your kids bounce to worship in the mornings, then JOINING THEM!
This is a great observation....getting my worship playlist together, so any more suggestions would be great!!
I'm way ahead of you Mark...well, maybe just by a couple of weeks. See: http://www.songsforthekeytolife.blogspot.com/

Thanks for sharing this Mark. Ironically one of our staff people has just started doing this while she runs each morning and then she blogs about what she heard from God in that play list. http://songsforthekeytolife.blogspot.com/
Thanks Mark, this is great encouragement. How often have I let the spirit sleep after my body has awoke? I'm sure it would total years. I always end my workout with Chris Tomlin's "Come Home Running," I want to be forever running toward my Savior's arms.
My playlist? Lots of Passion! And a mixture of songs from a variety of artists.

Mark -
I guess from the amount of responses this article resonated with a lot of people. I just wanted to thank you for sharing simple discipleship tips like this. Many times bloggers try to impress with being the most controversial or complicated, but sometimes we just need simple truth that inspires. Thanks for giving that. Your blog is a great encouragement - keep the posts coming.
God in this city was the one that hit me the biggest at catalyst too! And the timing of when we sang it - ugh, spot on. There is more to be done in this city, and that one, and that one, but before any work can be done, as you pointed out, there's some awakening to do inside first, and I will take your advice and begin turning my nonchalant morning tunes into a worship filled intentional experience. Thanks Mark. I also sat in on your session at Catalyst and read your book a month ago - great stuff!
