Corn Hole Evangelist

Bookmark and Share

I'm a corn hole evangelist. Fell in love with the game a few years ago. I don't play it all that often, but over holidays or on retreats we'll toss bags for six to eight hours. I've actually sustained a sports-related injury playing corn hole. Strained calf.

So a few months ago, Waters Edge Church asked if we'd be up for a staff-vs-staff competition. Let's just say that we did some discipleship! So cool to connect with their team. Exciting to hear about some of the things God is doing. But they need to pray less and play more corn hole.

I honestly think our staff could match-up with any staff in the country in corn hole. I'm not bragging! In fact, that might be pathetic! I think it was Jim Collins in Good to Great who says every organization needs to answer this question: what can you be the best at? I think the answer is corn hole. But I'm not sure what to do with that.

PS. I'm kidding about the "pray less" and "play more" thing!

Mark -- I've been under the weather today and was unable to join the Waters Edge guys in DC. Too bad that God had to get me sick so you guys could gain some confidence. Just kidding! Glad it was a good time -- wish I would've had the chance to connect with your team! Congrats on the big win!

That is a stinkin hilarious post. i think this is my first comment on your site, but I'm a 2 year reader.

Thanks for sharing all aspects of your life - it encourages me. Plus I met Dave Clark when I was a student at Valley Forge - great guy!

Well, thanks for everything. Have a great night.

oh man, sorry WEC guys...wish I could have been there to support. Mark thanks for the hospitality and "discipleship" of our team. Can't wait to catch back up with them on Sunday and hear all about it. Sorry I missed it.

In our book we won! Jesus said the first shall be last and the fact that we lost every game means that we are really first. Just trying to be like Jesus, Mark.

Mark,

you said,

> Let's just say that we did some discipleship!

I'm exploring the topic of discipleship, and there are naturally many opinions on that. But your use of this phrase precisely in this situation makes me ask you: how do you see discipleship? What is it? (a definition probably, or a list of situation that are the moments when discipleship happens).

I understand this is a broad topic. If there is some material somewhere (probably you blogged earlier on this, or there is a publication on theaterchurch.com that describes NCC's take on this), could you probably point me to that?

Thanks in advance. I'll understand if the answer will be very short :)

Myroslava,

I think discipleship is multi-dimensional. The Greek root means learner. But not just in the "knowing" sense. Also in the "doing" sense. I think discipleship is about the disciple becoming like Jesus. That is my plain and simple answer. Having his heart, his priorities, his mind, etc.

Blessings,

Mark

If you and your team are ever down in the DFW area, we'll take you up on your challenge. We're a rag-tag bunch but we're from Ohio... where the game was invented! We know cornhole! Ever tried the lazy-man's version? From a lawn chair?

Seriously, though... thanks for all the great info you share with us!
