I was reading a speech supposedly delivered by Bill Gates at a High School. It consisted of eleven things you need to know. Not sure if these are really his thoughts or not, but a few of them are worth sharing.
Rule 1: Life is not fair. Get used to it.
Rule 4: If your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss.
Rule 5: Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your grandparents had a different word for burger flipping. They called it opportunity.
Rule 7: Before you were born, your parents weren't as boring as they are now. They got that way paying your bills and cleaning your clothes.
And you gotta love the last rule.
Rule 11: Be nice to nerds. Chances are you'll end up working for one.

Who mentored that nerdy kid? love it!
Can you post a link to the speech you read if possible?
hilarious!
I wonder where you were reading this... it was not Bill Gates who said any of this. Please check your facts at http://www.snopes.com/language/document/liferule.asp
Hah - love that last one. He must have laughed many times over the years at that one. Thanks for sharing that.
These are some good starter points. He is alluding to something tragic about our culture: we have no initiation rites any longer. These are things that the students' community community should have taught them.

Thanks for sharing that, Mark. It is a good reminder.
(sometimes I feel like a nerd, so be nice to me)
Rule #1: Life is not fair. So let's fix it. :)
Great quote, but not Bill Gates. It's from the book "Dumbing Down our Kids" by educator Charles Sykes.
