I'm trying to nail down the subtitle for my next book titled Primal. I know you don't know what the book is about, but I'd love to get your take on these subtitles. What do you like? Not like? Any suggestions? Adaptations?

Getting Back to What Matters Most
An Unfiltered Faith for the Untamed Soul
Rediscovering the Dangerous Heart of Christianity
A Quest for the Lost Soul of Christianity
Rediscovering What Was Always There

The first one and the last one aren't very exciting.

For me it's close between "An Unfiltered Faith for the Untamed Soul" and "Rediscovering the Dangerous Heart of Christianity."

Although if I have to choose, I would choose the untamed soul one. "Dangerous Heart" makes me think of John Eldredge.

Getting Back to What Matters Most - fairly generic and inspecific
An Unfiltered Faith for the Untamed Soul - awesome!!!
Rediscovering the Dangerous Heart of Christianity - also good... kinda Eldredge-y though :)
A Quest for the Lost Soul of Christianity - eh... doesn't do it for me
Rediscovering What Was Always There - way too vague

I like the idea of 'primal' as that which serves successfully the basic instinct to survive.

The word "primal" refers to the original or primitive form of something. I know we think of things such as scream, danger, fear, etc... because of modern video games and movies. To me, "primal" has to do with what was the intent at the origin, what was the original purpose, it deals with fundamentals, essential components, etc...

I'll quit rambling. These popped into my head:

PRIMAL: The Original Intent
PRIMAL: The Original Instinct
PRIMAL: Original Instinct
PRIMAL: Instinctive Christianity
PRIMAL: Fundamental Instincts
PRIMAL: Recapturing a Lost Instinct
PRIMAL: Stirring a Lost Instinct
PRIMAL: Engageing a Lost Instinct
PRIMAL: Stirring a Lost Fire
PRIMAL: Awakening a Lost Instinct
PRIMAL: Rediscovering Original Intent
PRIMAL: Rediscovering The Master Plan
PRIMAL: The Pathway to Original Purpose
PRIMAL: Rediscovering Fire

From your list I was down with "An Unfiltered Faith for the Untamed Soul"

I don't know... I'm pretty over the standard "7 steps to happiness" books.

Most subtitles remind me of those kind of books. Kind of like subtitles on John Maxwells books, they reveal too much. "The Difference Maker: Making Your Attitude Your Greatest Asset" for example. If you change 'making' to 'make', you've got a concise summary of the whole book. It feels like it implies there's not much more to the book that what is summarized.

Personally, my vote would be for:

"Unfiltered Faith"

Because it steps away from the whole clichéd "An X for the Y". Substitute intention for X, and target reader for Y.

What PRIMAL means to me:

Jn 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
Jn 1:2 He was with God in the beginning.
Jn 1:3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.
Jn 1:4 In him was life, and that life was the light of men.

This is what PRIMAL is - or should be about - Jesus' quest to save lost humanity. A dangerous quest if ever there was one!

We can't afford to let our faith be filtered and our souls be tamed by the "world." He didn't.

thinking about relating it to the definition of primal. if you take the 'primitive' route of the definition you end up with:
a: not derived : original, primary
b: assumed as a basis 2 a: of or relating to the earliest age or period : b: closely approximating an early ancestral type : little evolved c: belonging to or characteristic of an early stage of development : crude, rudimentary d: of, relating to, or constituting the assumed parent speech of related languages 3 a: elemental, natural b: of, relating to, or produced by a people or culture that is nonindustrial and often nonliterate and tribal c: naive d (1): self-taught, untutored : produced by a self-taught artist

if you take the primary leaning of the definition you end up with:
1 : original, primitive
2 : first in importance : primary

FIRST IN IMPORTANCE

so, I guess it depends on which way you want to emphasize the word primal and the subtital should somehow relate.

that said, your first options strikes me as most fitting for the title :)
