A Small Group for Dads

Bookmark and Share

I haven't led a small group in a long time. Back in the day, I led our first Bible study for several years. It met in a little restaurant off of Lincoln Park called The Park Cafe. Then we met in our home for quite a while. I haven't led many small groups since because of my morphing portfolio. But I am super excited about leading a group for dads this summer. Not only is discipling sons one of my passions. I felt like, in light of the fact that this summer is all hands on deck, it would be good for me to lead on that level. Nothing will sharpen your edge as a leader and help you keep a pulse on people like leading a small group.

great thought Mark. Could not agree with you more. Have led a small group for several years and always gain amazing insight into what is happening in the big picture we call church.

I'd really love to be a part of that! Count me as one of those anticipating you writing a book laying out some discipleship ideas for kids and their parents...

You won't have any problem gettin' back in the saddle. I've been leading at least 1 small group a week since 2006, usually a men's group, though right now I have a men's group and a Friday night couples discipleship small group. I love the connected community of a small group that is so lovingly intense at times, christianity on a base level at it's best.

Mark, would you be following a special curriculum? If so, could you share which one?

Sounds great, Mark. Are you "blazing a trail"? Or are you "following a path"?

Love to know what materials you are using.

I'm working with my boys (8 and 10) this summer on this.

Grace and Peace,

Another Mark

Would love to learn from you about this subject - got a son of my own (he's only 1 and a half now) but I wanna be prepared. We're doing a little now, but it's tough to do much since he can't even talk yet.

I'm also a youth minister and I'm trying to put together some things for our dads.

I have been in a young married men's group for the past few months. It has been one of the most transparent & authentic groups I have ever been in. You can really open up & talk about stuff that affect men. Very effective. My advice - don't hold back on anything, but commit to total privacy within the group.
Mark Driscoll's "Men & Marriage" from the TRIAL series [available on the net], is brilliant to use in this type of group.

Look forward to more details on your small group and related materials. I have two boys - 13 and 10 - and have been looking for good materials on the next phase of being a dad. I've already implemented pieces of your discipleship covenant with my boys - look forward to more great ideas!

Want a challange Mark? Take your small group on our Mountian climb. :) Every year our mens group takes a group of about 50 guys to climb/hike a 14,000 foot peak in CO. Also every year we pick a "manly" book to read and discuss on the way out and while we are up there. 2 years ago we used "In a pit with a lion on a snowy day." we'd love for you to come and join us! More info is at www.bandofbrothersomaha.com Cost is minimal and it is all about guys being guys. It's time for men to remember why God put us on his earth!
