Junky Car Club

Bookmark and Share

A few years ago I joined the Junky Car Club. It was started by my friend, Mike Foster. And I love the motto: living on less so we can give more. I'm not only a proud member, I actually posed for the Junky Car Club Calendar a few years ago. I was Mr. August. I'm guessing it's the first and last modeling job I ever get.

So a few months ago our Honda Accord with 226,000 miles on it started leaking on the inside. The passenger side leaks cold liquid. I'm guessing it's related to the AC. But I'm driving it a few days ago and it leaks hot oil all over my foot that is on the gas pedal and I've got flip flops on. Ouch. It was a painful yet proud moment.

Here's to everyone whose identity is not based on the car they drive!

I have an 88 S-10 with over 200K. A 1994 Honda Accord with a dodgy transmission with 180K and a 1982 Honda Goldwing. I'm totally rolling with the oldies! My wife has a 96 Civic, so that one's old too!

I drive a '74 Volkswagen Super Beetle and how I got it is the best story... My first car was a '69 Bug Convertible so when my son turned 15 I started looking for a bug for him. I was on staff at my church at the time and went to the office to pick up my paycheck. In the parking lot was a white (and primer) bug that I hadn't seen before. I asked if anyone knew who it belonged to and the finance director said it was donated for the building fund and the family had just walked out the door 5 minutes earlier. Sold!

Well, son had a HUGE growth spurt by the time he got his license and his feet were too big to work the peddles. I just didn't have the heart to sell it so I sold my not-yet-paid-for truck and I've been driving it for 5 years!

Awesome motto and one that I totally embrace! I have a 1998 Winstar with 146k on it and a 1998 Stratus with 230K on it. My philosophy is "drive them till they totally die" and then pay cash for a newer "used" vehicle. Haven't had any leaks yet, but did have the alternators go out in both vehicles over a span of 9 days. Plus, both vehicles have dinged up hoods because of all the deer that live around my house. Still cheaper to fix them than to make a car payment.

My 1992 Ford Taurus is the dream vehicle I always wanted. All the rust really makes the puke-green color pop!

I love the JCC! I've got a 1991 Pontiace Bonneville with 165k miles and my wife's 2001 Caravan has 159k.

I love having no car payments! I've also been blessed with some mechanically-minded friends who enjoy working on cars. All I have to do is buy the parts and feed my friends some lunch in exchange for their labor. What a great deal!

I love it!

I'm the proud owner of a 1993 Bonneville with (only) 150k miles, but then again I drive 4 miles roundtrip to work each day (and that includes going home for lunch)!

Ack - this is a hard one for me. How do you balance frugality with safety? I've been in several accidents (none of them my fault) and now that I have a daughter, I had to get a car rear-side air bags.
