New Adventures and Old Traditions

Bookmark and Share

I think vacations are all about new adventures and old traditions. I love seeing new places and trying new things. I'm all about adventure vacations. But I also love old traditions. And that's what our annual beach vacation is all about.

Our kids are learning to love the traditions. The traditions are like emotional anchors. We've got the Grotto Pizza tradition, the Fractured Prune donut tradition, and the Dairy Queen tradition. Yes, many of our traditions revolve around food. But there is something so nostalgic about going back to the same place every year. It's like our bedroom door where we've measured the kid's height over the years. It's a benchmark. The kids have so many accumulated memories at Rehoboth Beach. And that is what makes it so special. The more times we go the more we say "remember when."

For what it's worth, both Lora and I had families that went on vacation to the same place every year growing up. For her, it was Bethany Beach near the Michigan Dunes. For me, it was Bedman's Beach on Lake Ida in Alexandria, Minnesota. For our kids it'll be Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.

Anybody else have any vacation traditions?

We grew up going to Rehoboth as well! I haven't been in like 8 years though. We used to go ride the Go-Carts on the main highway leading in, played the horse racing game on the boardwalk...and of course always got some Thrashers too! (as well as your Grotto's tradition too!)

I grew up going to ocean city but now it's Rocky mtn NP for camping. Picking up goodies in Estes Park on the way in. We now live 20 min from the beach in Tampa so our job has been bringing us out here for the 4th summer in a row! Oh the goodie shop is Rocky Mtn chocolate factory.

We rent a cabin at Hume Lake Christian Camp in N. California 5 of the last 6 years. We missed last year due to a family missions trip to Africa and we're all dying to get back this year...5 more weeks! We have so many family memories with our two boys (now 11 & 13).

Growing up we drove to Florida every summer to the beaches up and down the coast of Florida. Even though we are all spread over the country. We still like to meet in Rosemary Beach Florida.
Grandkids and all.

hey Mark,

our family vacation tradition is Rehoboth as well. We'll be there next week, in fact. Love the boardwalk and funland and grottos and just being with the fam in a familiar place.

enjoy your vacation this summer!

For our family it was Shaddy Oak Resort on West Leaf Lake near Henning, MN. The resort has since shifted but the tradition remains. This August will mark the 39th year that some part of our family will spend a week at fishing camp on a lake in northcentral MN...three generations will be represented.
