We need to dream big dreams not because we need to accomplish big things. What we accomplish is a byproduct. We need to dream big dreams because it keeps us on our knees in raw dependence upon God. Unless He intervenes we look foolish. Dreams have far more to do with who we become in the process than the what we accomplish. They stretch us. And that's why they are so good for us. You want to take your prayer life to the next level? Dream God-sized dreams!
Our vision of starting a dream center in DC is way beyond our ability. And the thought of opening our second coffeehouse is a little overwhelming. We can't do either of those things. It's going to have to be God. And that's why it's so good for us.

There's nothing wrong with big dreams per se, but is that really what keeps us on our knees? I thought it was when we realize how utterly sinful we are and how we justly deserve the wrath of God today and forever that we fall to our knees and beg for mercy.
I don't see how dreaming big dreams can have the same effect.
In my experience it's both/and.

@Randy think about Gideon in the bible...What was utterly impossible for him kept him reliant on God.
I love the phrase "raw dependence." Yes, that's what is needed. I was just looking at the lives of the last four kings of Judah, and the same phrase is repeated about all of them: they did evil in the eyes of the Lord. They gave up. They caved in to the pressures around them. They stopped believing God for miracles. They stopped dreaming. They no longer had that raw dependence on Him.
God, keep me desperately dependent on You!

Someone once told me that what you pray about is what you are depending on God for. When we dream big we have to pray because we have to depend on God to help us. I loved this blog post. Thanks Mark. I spent my prayer time today DREAMING BIG, specifically as it relates to our worship department. I know God will help.
For some time my "big dream" simply has been to find a job in which I could support myself.
Isn't it time for U to write another book? I have read all U have written. You have enriched my life with your writings and I am so thankful to God, My Father... for you and your ministry..please pray for our president (I need some help in this area as to how to pray for him) and our country..I understand that God allowed Job to go through trials so that the people coming behind him have a written document ON "PERSEVERANCE" (Perseverance for Dummys)I also know that the Bible says God places Kings and replaces Kings (my words). I understand it has to w/God's organizational chart
(so to speak). May be your book could address how we should address God on behalf of our leaders as we know it is a spiritual battle...please help! Respectfully, Dawn Thorpe dcthorpe777@comcast.net or dcthorpe@gmail.com God Bless U!
I really enjoyed your post. Throughout the Bible God used dreams and dreamers to accomplish His will. And Joel 2 speaks of how God will give dreams and visions to the young and old in the last days. It's time for Christians to start dreaming big again!
I recently published a book entitled "Dream B.I.G. in 3D: How to Pursue a Bold, Innovative, God-Inspired Life!" It's my goal to lead and inspire people to dream God-sized dreams not just for themselves but for those God has called them to reach.

Mark - I really think you should hook up with Mitch Matthews who facilitates city-wide "Big Dream Gatherings." He's using the talents and gifts God blessed him with help others realize their undiscovered gifts.

No matter how big our dreams are, we should not forget that God is bigger than our dreams. However, let all that day-dream wake up and start day-acting. God is waiting!
Playing in my garden has been a "Godly Garden". God and I carry on special conversations there. The sun is warm, the birds were raising a carefree chorus, and thankfully, no one else was around. As I began talking to God the words of a old hymn cam came to mind and almost unconsciously, I began singing it softly. Then and there I felt emerging twinges of a"restored soul" What is I had not known these old hymns. But as we sing a new song to the Lord, let's not forget the old ones. It's the sturdy old hymns of the faith that strengthen and steady me when I'm weary and worn or just plain joyful. They are the ones I sing while working in the Garden with God or when rising troubled in the night. Hymns, especially those chock full of theology, such as Watts and Wesley's permeate our souls with the timeless veracities of Scripture. These Hymns help us praise God! They're shafts of brilliant sunlight through the clouds. They provide an almost mystical connection with the endless anthems of praise raising at this very moment before the Heavenly Throne. They unite the Lord's earth-bound church in heavenly harmony. They enable us to pray and praise God, sometimes when we're wearly or worried for words. They give us a way of talking to ourselves, of encouraging ourselves in the Lord, as we do when se sing "Be Still My Soul". They also give us a pulpit for preaching to others, exhorting others to come to Christ just as they are without one plea. They connect us with generations now gone. We have all but lost our Constitution, please let us not lose our Hymns of old. Teach them to your children and your children's children. Read the Book "Then Sings My Soul" by Robert J Morgan and U will be blessed. Dawn Thorpe - Woodstock, Ga dcthorpe@gmail.com
