Don't Burn Bridges

Bookmark and Share

I'm going to blog lots of lessons we're learning as we transition from Union Station to what's next. Leadership is not learned in a classroom. Leadership is learned when you are thrust into a situation you didn't anticipate and have no idea how to handle it. Those are the moments that make you or break you. You're between an Egyptian Army and a Red Sea. What are you going to do?

The last thing we did at Union Station was take an offering for the thirty theater employees who lost their jobs with no notice. It's the right thing to do. We wanted to go out the way we came in! We're going to be a blessing no matter what circumstances we find ourselves in.

I've learned that how you exit a situation says so much more about your character than how you enter. You need to exit with no regrets. This is so critical: don't burn bridges because you might need to recross them. For the record, I don't think the door at Union Station is permanently closed.

Never put a period where God puts a comma
!

Mark - LOVE LOVE LOVE this leadership example and blessing the employees on the way out. A small price to pay for an impression that they will never, ever forget.

Mark,
It's kind of surreal to see this. It's funny, I just reread chapter 6 (Sometimes It Takes a Shipwreck) in Wild Goose Chase this morning and then read the news about Union Station. Isn't it amazing how we continue to face these kind of challenges regardless of how much we've embraced the truth that a closed door is simply a detour to the open door? I'm praying for you and your team as you anxiously watch for what God has in the works with this.

Thanks for the past two posts Mark. so excited that your group took up an offering for the employees. To me, that speaks louder than all the preaching they could hear. Way to go NCC!

Mark...when I read the news it knocked the wind out of me, so I can only imagine what it did to you. So many of us around the country will be praying for you, your team, and your community. As you said, the cloud has lifted and will lead you to the next step. May his wisdom, patience, grace, and love guide your steps. Thank you for the example of finishing well by being a blessing.

I can only imagine the impression you left on those employees. WWJD? This is EXACTLY what Jesus would have done -- no question about it.

Somehow this experience of Union Station closing reminds me of when I was about 8 mos. pregnant with my 1st son (now 24yrs!)I realized that #1 the baby was getting too big physically to remain in its container (yikes!) and #2 that it was time for the baby to be born into the world. And alas, beautiful Sean was born. When that little baby became a man I realized once again, that his life was too big to be contained. This time not so much physically (although he could take down a box of cereal & gallon of milk in a sitting), rather God needed him to be of the world ..... God is so cool :)
