So I went to get a new passport today. My passport expires right before my trip to Peru next summer to hike the Inca Trail. Long story short, the passport website I went to said you get your old passport back. But the guy at the office said they confiscate it.
I think I'm going to "lose" my passport. Is it just me or does anyone else want to hang on to their old passport? What a memento! Each stamp represents so many moments and memories. I don't want to give it back!

Last time I had to renew my passport, I got mine back with a big hole in the middle.
I've never heard of it being confiscated unless it's a new law that went into effect this year!
I hear you! I had traveled quite a big in asia some years back, but when I had to update my pastor and I sent it in by mail they never gave me back my old one. Not sure...but I don't think the situation looks to good. Blessings on that.
When I renewed mine last year, I had to send the old one in. It was returned to me with a hole punched through the middle, along with my new one. Fun to see the "then and now" pictures, taken 10 years apart.
My wife and I both had to renew a couple months ago and we got ours back. We were so relieved to be able to keep the memories!
You're supposed to get the old one back, but it will come in a separate mailing from your new one. Don't panic when it doesn't arrive at the same time.
I wanted mine back as well. Each stamp has many experiences and many stories attached.
One more vote for "you'll get it back" if you do it by mail. This year I got my new passport in one mailing, my new ID card for Canada, etc. in another mailing, and the old passport with two holes in it in the third mailing.
I wonder if the rules are different via mail vs. going into the office?
What happens if you "lose" your passport?
Make color copies before you send it away, just in case.
Get a new visa in it (who cares where for) then they will have to send it back to you because you have to use the unexpired visa. Ok, dumb idea, but it works.
Although I don't have a passport, I WOULD CERTAINLY want to keep my old one! My goodness, I agree with you completely! Every stamp serves as a precious memory! Good Luck!
Just renewed mine before my trip to Brazil and it was returned. They too told me it would be confiscated. No fears, it will be returned.
When I got a new passport (two years ago) they sent my old one back with two holes punched in it. Not to sound preachy but do the right thing. There are more important things you could lose, like credibility.
Pastor Mark,
I just got back from Peru last week - spent 5 days on a trail, ending up at Machu Picchu. It is the trip of a lifetime (even though I say this about ALL my trips, what I can say, they are all wonderful even if it's just a week in West Virginia). I'm so glad to read that you are going to go next year!
