Watchtower

Bookmark and Share

"I will climb up to my watchtower and stand at my guardpost. There I will wait to see what the Lord says." Habakkuk 2:1

Everyone needs a watchtower. You need a place to go where you can get out of your routine. It doesn’t have to be far away. It might be as close as your closet. But it needs to be someplace where you get good reception. One of my watchtowers is the observation gallery at the National Cathedral. The 360-degree panoramic view of the nation’s capital gives me fresh perspective. It also helps me dream God-sized dreams. Another one of my watchtowers is the rooftop of Ebenezers. I hear God’s voice more clearly up there.

Where do you go to get perspective? What places help you dream bigger dreams? Where do you go to hear the voice of God more clearly?

Thomas Edison sat in his thinking chair with a metal ball bearing in each palm. Henry David Thoreau skipped stones on Walden Pond. Alexander Graham Bell had a “dreaming place” in a hollow of trees overlooking the Grand River.

Mine is not so much a place as it is a time & quality... early & quiet. There is something about being anywhere in the house while my girls are all asleep and it's still dark that let's me know God is there. This is what He said to me this morning:

Silence is praise to you, Zion-dwelling God,
And also obedience.
You hear the prayer in it all.
Psalm 65:1-2

Thanks for the post!

Thank you for that reminder. Lord Jesus Himself the best example where we see Him withdrawing to places like the sea shore, mountain top, river side. Ahh! the beauty of taking a pause and getting renewed again and the heart throbbing with the heart-pulses of our Savior. Sweet experience. Glory be to GOD.

This is such a great reminder. It's kind of ironic - more of a God-thing - but I had actually just posted something similar on my blog yesterday that God had reminded me about through my one-year-old son - http://jonathanmichelleandbrayden.blogspot.com/2009/11/ledge.html - and then I read your blog post. Thanks for challenging me again with finding my place to really encounter the Lord.

Oftentimes, the answer to all of the issues, conflicts, stress and fears we are facing is but -

.... a solitude with God.

There we realized that all we need is Him.

Thanks for the post.

Mark,

I have a place I call "THE VISTA OF MY CALLING" located about 20 miles west of Charlotte, NC. on a hill in front of the former NC Orthopedic Hospital in Gastonia, NC. I can see from the city where I live in a county of about 190,000 all the way to downtown Charlotte with a greater population of over 1,000,000 in the GREATER CHARLOTTE region. Our church is located in the town of Belmont RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE of our church's mission field. It gives me a GREAT reminder and perspective. I've begun having my Monday morning study time begin there.
