Annual Leadership Retreat

Bookmark and Share

About to hop a flight back to DC. I feel like I'm "getting out of Dodge" just in time. Greensboro is expecting a snow storm that could shut the city down. Had a great time speaking to and hanging out with The Anglican Mission in the Americas.

Gotta get back for our 2010 Annual leadership retreat. It kicks off tonight. One of the highlights of the year every year! High-octane energy. High-calorie snacks. Gonna be a Holy High!

This is when our vision-casting season begins. We cast vision to our small group and ministry leaders. Then we'll do a vision series in February. We've got some amazing miracles and big visions to talk about.

Hello,

My name is Anne, and I am currently a freshman at the George Washington University. First, I would like to let you know how blessed I am to have found NCC! I am so inspired after reading your book, "Wild Goose Chase," and am currently reading "Primal."
But, I digress. I was wondering about what you thought about the Sabbath. I grew up in a Christian home, but we never kept a biblical Sabbath. The closest we came to achieving the Sabbath was attending church in the mornings.
Earlier today, I found an interesting article/book about the meaning of Sabbath and how it should be kept:

http://www.reformedonline.com/view/reformedonline/sabbath2.htm

It was quite a read, and there was an aspect to the article that left me dumbfounded. It implied, or more likely stated bluntly, that it was sinful to celebrate Christmas/Easter/Christian holidays. I understand that what the author meant to get at was that it is wrong to disregard the weekly Sabbath and only earnestly give God worship/time/honor on those few man-made holidays of the year when we should be keeping the fourth commandment throughout the entire year, but what about celebrating Christian holidays AND keeping the Sabbath??
Also, I am struggling with wanting to keep the Sabbath and dedicate it to God on Sunday and volunteer and help those in need on Saturdays.
I worry because as a biomedical engineering major, I have so little time. Creating a Sabbath day in my schedule already depletes much time I need to study and do homework.
God has clearly shown me many signs in my life that this major and school is where he has called me to be, and that my God-given talent is knowledge. If I were to keep the Sabbath and do volunteer work on Saturdays, my academics will slip.
Wouldn't I be sinning and dishonoring God by not studying as much as I should be when He has called me to do my best in school right now?
As much as I want to dedicated one day a week to God, I also want to be hands and feet for Christ.

What am I to do? I am so, SO confused. Alongside praying to God about these issues, I thought that it wouldn't hurt to ask a spiritual leader about them also...
I apologize for a long post and if this was in any means an inconvenience to your busy schedule.

Sincerely,

Anne M.

Hey Anne- I would encourage you to read The Rest of God by Mark Buchanan. Best treatment of the subject of Sabbath that I think I've seen.
