Case of Books

I keep hearing about more and more churches doing a sermon series based on In a Pit with a Lion on a Snowy Day. Just as a reminder, all of our graphics, videos, and transcripts from our Chase the Lion series are available at www.chasethelion.com for free.

And if you want to get a case of books (24 books) at a discounted rate, you can email resources@theaterchurch.com.

One Prayer

I got a call from Craig Groeschel last week inviting us to be part of what I'd call a kingdom series called One Prayer. The concept is pretty cool. In the month of June, we'll all do the same sermon series. I'll preach one message. But I'll invite three other pastors from three other churches to teach at NCC via video. Great way to get some world-class communicators to speak at your church without the honorarium! We'll all choose different topics based on this question: if you had one prayer for the church-at-large, what would it be?

Love to see some DC area churches jump in on this. And I think there would be tremendous synergy if we did some prayer initiatives surrounding the series.

Sabbath

Today was a true sabbath.

I put my family on a plane back to DC early this morning and I had the day to myself. It's been a while since I had a day with nothing to do and nowhere to go. I hung out around the third street promenade and read for six hours.

Topped things off tonight with a visit to the Mayan where Mosaic holds its Sunday night services. Absolutely love the venue! Great vibe. And it was a great message by Erwin McManus. Love the way he communicates! I felt right at home. Very similar demographic to NCC--lots of single twenty-somethings.

Whirlwind Week

Can't believe the family is flying home tomorrow! I'm sticking around for a few days to speak at the Awaken Conference. Man, this week flew. Last night we swung by the Crystal Cathedral since it was about a mile from our hotel. Really inspiring to see it in person.

For what it's worth, we were inspired to meet in a theater because that's how Willowcreek and Bill Hybels got their start. And if I remember right, Bill Hybels may have been inspired by the Crystal Cathedral and Robert Schuller because they started out at a drive-in movie theater.

We topped things off today with a visit to Legoland. Definitely geared towards little kids, but very cool place.

I feel like part of my job as a parent is to create memories. We definitely created some this week. It'll be interesting to see what the kids remember when they grow up.

Tired Feet

We spent about twelve hours at Disney on Wednesday. Very tired feet! Favorite ride? Definitely riding Space Mountain with my Parker and Summer! It was worth the sixty minute wait. The park was pretty packed--spring break. But we had a blast fighting the crowds and riding the rides.

On Thursday we hung out at Universal Studios. Loved everything from the studio tour to the Jurassic Park ride to the Water World show. So cool to see some of the movie sets from some of the movies I love.

Lots of great memories from the last two days!

Cali

We survived the cross-country flight with the kids. So much easier now that they are a little older and can entertain themselves! Of course, two in-flight movies didn't hurt. Landed at LAX and went straight to the Santa Monica Pier. Ate at the end of the pier at a place called Mariasol. And then we walked the Third Street Promenade. The kids collapsed on our drive across town to our hotel.

The highlight of the day? Josiah saying, "This is the funnest day of my life." And we haven't even gone to Disney yet!

Off to California

It was an amazing Easter weekend. I was so proud of the hundreds of volunteers that made our two Egg Hunts a huge success. We blessed a lot of kids and families this weekend. Have to admit that I was absolutely exhausted when everything was said and done. And I just about lost my voice on my fourth message. But we made it.

Can't wait to go on vacation with the family. Perfect timing! The whole family hops a flight and we'll be in LA on Monday afternoon.

What a Weekend

Last night we had two Good Friday services at Ebenezers. Such a great way to start the weekend. Today we're hosting two Easter Eggstravaganzas--one on Capitol Hill and one in Arlington, VA. Huge props to the folks who stuffed 20,000 eggs!

Then tonight we've got a baptism after our second Saturday night service. It has become an annual tradition. It's such a great time frame to get baptized--between Good Friday and Easter.

And, of course, we'll top off the weekend with a celebration of the resurrection at our three movie theater locations on Sunday.

And that's why we give our staff Easter Monday off!

who you want and who you think

Alright, I'm learning a tough lesson in my NCAA tournament brackets. I'm realizing that if you pick who you want to win instead of who you think will win you might not fare so well. I definitely listened to my heart instead of my head with some of my picks. My only hope for redemption at this point is a Georgetown championship! And again, that's who I want to win!

Let's just say that it's a good thing I don't gamble!

March madness!

Spring Break

Our family is going to spend spring break in the LA area. I'm speaking at the Southern California District Council next week. The following week I'm speaking at the Awaken Conference. In between, our family is going to hang out in sunny Southern California.

We'll definitely hit Disneyland and Catalina Island for sure. Anybody have any "must see" or "must do" ideas? Sure wish I could get Summer in to see a taping of American Idol, but that seems next to impossible. We might try to hit another TV taping.

Looking forward to chilling with the family for a week!

Carpe Digital

Our digital pastor, David Russell, just shared some interesting webcast stats with me. Total viewing time in 2007 was 14,958,439 seconds or a little more than 173 days. We delivered 1,132,691 megabytes of total data. And our webcast reached all 50 states plus 83 countries. Can you say word of mouse!

I view our webcast as church on demand. Props to Dave Clark, our pastor of media, for that concept. It's certainly NO SUBSTITUTE for church. But it's a great supplement. It not only expands our worldwide influence exponentially. We're also discovering that more and more people watch the webcast before visiting a service. It's our taste test.

For what it's worth, 54% of our attenders visited theaterchurch.com before coming to a service. This is old news but a healthy reminder: your website is the front door to your church! It's your first impression. Especially with our demographic--about 66% of NCCers are single twenty-somethings.

When Jesus said, "Go into all the world," I think he meant by all means possible. I think "the world" includes places like facebook and myspace. We're actually putting together a facebook advertising campaign right now. After all, that is the demographic we're going after! I think we need to rethink the way we define influence. And we need to keep redeeming technology and using it for God's purposes!

In the words of the Apostle Paul: "I become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might reach some."

Carpe Digital.

The Whiteboard Sessions

Thoroughly enjoyed hanging out with Ben Arment today. Love the way he thinks. And he's one the most authentic people I know.

Ben is organizing a very cool conference called The Whiteboard Sessions. Great cross-section of speakers that I think will make for an unforgettable conference. Plus I love that it's local. The date is May 22.

Booklets

I got 1200 pounds of Wild Goose Chase samplers yesterday. That's a boatload. The booklet consists of two chapters that give readers a taste of the book. We're going to give them away at some of the conferences I'm speaking at.

Here's a sneak peak at the cover.

Unplugged

The website for unplugged just went live.

The inspiration for Unplugged dates back to something called the school for pastoral nurture that I was part of about eight years ago. I got to hang out with Jack Hayford for a solid week. And there were only thirty-five of us in the group. It was much more transformational and conversational than any "conference" I've been part of.

The concept behind Unplugged is simple: less conference and more conversation. I want to have a "no holds barred" conversation about the five greatest challenges every leader faces.

Long story short, I'd love to extend an invitation to be part of the inaugural Unplugged event, June 26-27. I've decided to tag-team with pastors I personally want to hang out with. First up is Jud Wilhite, pastor of Central Christian Church in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Space is limited. You can register here.

March Madness

Just thought I'd share a couple NCAA Tournament pools I'm in and extend an invitation to join the fun. I just joined the Catalyst Conference pool. I'm also in the church planting bloggers pool put on by the Exponential Conference.

For what it's worth, I'm picking Georgetown to win it all. I'm not sure that's the logical choice. But in light of the fact that we just launched our fourth location in Gtown how can I pick anyone else to win it all?

I'm Sore

I went into hibernation over winter. Lots of White Mochas and very little exercise. I put my workouts on hold for several weeks because of my writing deadline. Man, I'm feeling it today. I got back into my workout routine yesterday and I feel like an old man. But it feels good to be sore! Parker and I also start training this week for the 10K we're running at the end of May. We were going to start training two weeks ago but I'm just over all of my flu/cold symptoms.

It's spring training time!

Simple Truths

This weekend we finished up our Last Words series. All I can say is this: it was good to spend three weeks at the foot of the cross. And it was a good change of pace to celebrate communion three weeks in a row! We typically celebrate communion once a month.

The longer I preach the more I realize that it all comes back to the simple truths! It's so easy to major in minors isn't it? But this Holy Week is an annual reminder of what it's all about.

On a personal note, I went through a season in my early twenties when I explored lots of different religious traditions. And I was impressed with some of the concepts and rituals and practices. But it also cemented this core belief: Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. No one else lived a sinless life. No one else died for my sins. And no one else was raised from the dead. My faith isn't anchored in concepts or rituals or practices. My faith is anchored in a person who was fully human and fully God.

I'm so grateful for the life he lived and the death he died. I'm so grateful for the unlimited access I have to the presence of God because of what Christ did on the cross. And I'm so grateful that my standing with God is not contingent upon what I can do for God, it's contingent upon what Christ did for me at Calvary!

Ebenezers Anniversary

Two years ago today, March 15, 2006, we opened Ebenezers Coffeehouse. What a wild ride! The word "Ebenezer" is taken from I Samuel 7:12 where Samuel builds an altar to God and calls it Ebenezer. It means hitherto the Lord has helped us. Or my personal translation: so far so God.

Just wanted to take this opportunity to thank God for his blessing on our coffeehouse. And I'm hoping we open a second coffeehouse this coming year! We've got to keep praying ridiculous prayers! I'd love to see an Ebenezers in the heart of Georgetown or Old Town, Alexandria.

So far so God!

Easter Eggstravaganza '08

Next weekend we host our annual Easter Eggstravaganza. We're actually doing two of them this year--one in Virginia and one in DC. Just a heads up for locals. Lincoln Park is closed so we're hosting it at Garfield Park. Looking forward to the egg hunt. It's one of the highlights of the year!

The New Jersey Turnpike

I drove up to New Jersey today. It was a long drive, but I actually enjoyed four hours of solitude. Plus I've been flying so much that driving was a nice change of pace. But here's the crazy thing. I had to stop at an ATM to get cash because the tolls were so expensive! I only had ten bucks and my tolls totaled $13.15.

I hung out with some New Jersey pastors tonight. And I'm speaking at a conference tomorrow. Then I'll drive home and speak at NCC Saturday night. Makes for a long weekend, but I'm still so relieved to be done with my book that everything seems relaxing right now!

Margins and Mentors

Went out to breakfast with my friend and mentor, Dick Foth. We hit the little breakfast joint at Eastern Market--favorite place to break fast. Great food and great conversation. I've been feeling the stress lately, but a conversation with Foth is like a deep breath. Talked about everything from church to family. So grateful for a sounding board in my life.

One of the great challenges leaders face is growing on all fronts. When we're growing in one dimension of our lives we often neglect another area. Not easy to grow physically, relationally, occupationally, and spiritually all at the same time! And the tendency is to neglect the most important things in favor of the most urgent things. |

Someone recently asked me the greatest challenge I'm facing in my life right now. The answer is easy: margin. During this writing season I feel like every inch of margin was used for writing. Look forward to larger margins in the coming months.

Sigh of Relief

Last week I finished the last chapter of Wild Goose Chase. This week I sent off an epilogue and we went through a round of edits. I definitely have brain cramps! And I am out of energy and out of perspective. But I feel great about the book.

To be perfectly honest, it was harder writing the second book than the first book. If I didn't feel called to write I would have never finished. It was definitely a labor of love, emphasis on labor! Feels good to be coming out of the writing stage. We'll spend the next several months ramping up for the 08.08.08 release date.

Weekend Review

We experimented this weekend with what we're calling a hybrid multi-site model. Instead of one preacher and one message across all locations, all of our campus pastors preached live at their locations. I still believe that one primary communicator across locations is key to maintaining the same DNA. But I also believe it's important for our campus pastors to have a preaching presence. We'll continue having some hybrid weekends with all of our campus pastors teaching live.

We continued the Last Words series. The focus this week was "Father, forgive them for they know not what they do." Our family attended our Ballston location. Great message. And I really enjoyed communion. We usually serve communion in communion bags or by passing the communion elements, but we actually came forward to receive communion at Ballston today. Made it a communal experience.

Really enjoyed just going to church today! I needed a little preaching break!

New Twist on Lent

The Washington Post did an article on Lent that cites NCC so I thought I'd share the link. Interesting the way some evangelical churches are borrowing some catholic traditions. Also, here's a link to our 40 day Lent blog that is cited in the article.

i2 Conference

Two days ago I picked up a little flu bug. So I've been running a little temperature, had a hacking cough, and feeling all-around lousy. Getting up at 4 AM to catch a flight to Houston probably didn't speed the healing process. I'm not gonna lie. I felt pretty bad physically before hitting the stage today, but I really feel like God gave me just enough strength to not just make it through my two sessions but actually enjoy them!

It was such a joy meeting Kerry Shook. Man, he's got an infectious laugh. The kind of guy you can't not like! Did you know the Shook's book, One Month to Live, hit the New York Times Bestseller list? So happy for them. And excited about the way God will use the book.

It was also an honor to meet Kirbyjon Caldwell, Senior Pastor of Windsor Village United Methodist Church. Amazing communicator!

I'm going to sleep good tonight.

Off to Houston

I'm off to Houston to speak at the Innovative Impact Conference. Excited about meeting Kerry Shook and seeing Fellowship of the Woodlands. Heard lots of great things! I always take a couple books with me when I travel. Seems only appropriate that I'm taking One Month to Live, the new book by Kerry and Chris Shook.

The Death of a Car

On my way to the airport on Monday, clouds of smoke were coming out the tail pipe of my car. It was so bad that the people behind me had to wait for the smoke to clear before taking off. And I'm not exaggerating. So I took the car into the garage yesterday and it looks like it's an internal engine problem.

As a member of the Junky Car Club, I've always wanted to drive our 95 Ford Taurus into the ground. And twelve years isn't bad. But I was hoping we had a few more years left. Which brings me to the $64,000 question: what do you do when a car repair will cost more than the car is even worth?

Kopp's Custard

Right before heading to the airport to fly home, I went by my old house in Greendale, Wisconsin. And we made a pit stop at Kopp's Custard. The burger and custard were even better than I remembered.

Can't believe how small our house was! Man, I swear it was twice as big as what it was. But maybe that's because I'm twice the size. I lived there from the second to fifth grades. The current owner was actually kind enough to let me in. Lots of flashbacks!

Where were you?

I'll never forget where I was when I heard about Brett Favre's retirement. I was actually speaking to a group of Cheesehead pastors in Stevens Point, Wisconsin. And I just said, "Let's pray that Favre plays one more year." One of the pastors interrupted me and said he just got a text message that Favre retired. I thought it was a really bad joke. It wasn't. All of the energy went out of the room. We actually took a five minute break so I could collect my thoughts.

Sad day for Packer's fans!

Unplugged

Alright folks. Here's the scoop. We have a core value at NCC: everything is an experiment. And that is how we're approaching our conferences in 2008. We're going to put Buzz on the shelf for one year and experiment with half a dozen events that are less conference and more conversation.

Unplugged
will happen June 26-27. Space is limited. We'll hang at Ebenezers for 48 hours. And registration will open soon!

More details to follow.

Cheeseheads

Great to hang out with some cheeseheads yesterday and today!

Spent about six hours with some pastors from the Milwaukee area yesterday. That is a marathon for a Monday. Still feel like I'm recuperating from the weekend. Then we drove up to Stevens Point where I'll do another gathering today. Yesterday was one of those days where you feel absolutely exhausted and energized by the time your head hits the pillow.

Really enjoyed hanging out with Aaron Cole, pastor of Life Church in Germantown. He's been kind enough to cart me around the state. I lived in Wisconsin when I was in elementary school so I've had lots of flashbacks. I keep asking Aaron Wisconsin trivia questions!

I head back home tonight.

Off to Wisconsin

I'm headed to Wisconsin on Monday and Tuesday for two-days with some pastors. I lived in Greendale, a suburb of Milwaukee, for a few years when I was a kid. Excited about swinging by a place we used to frequent called Kopp's Custard.

Last Game

We finished up our basketball season with a double-header last night. We lost an "exhibition" game. But we won our final regular season game with a huge win. And Parker had a season-high in scoring which is a great way to go out.

I have mixed emotions about the end of our season. It'll be nice to get four time slots back in the week. Basketball sort of squeezed everything else out to the margin. But I'll miss the adrenaline!

Parker and I are actually going to start training for our 10K. It's the physical challenge part of the discipleship covenant he signed. I think it'll be much easier for him to get into shape than me. I ran a triathlon last fall, but then I feel like I went into hibernation this winter. Writing has really cut into my workouts the last few months.

Ebenezers Article

Ebenezers continues to make the news. Very cool article coming out in the Washington Post tomorrow. Check it out.

The longer I do ministry the less I want to do things I can take credit for
. I want God to do things that I cannot take credit for. And that is where the favor of God comes into play. Here's my definition of the favor of God: it is God doing something for you that you cannot do for yourself. And I think positive press qualifies!

So grateful for the favor of God on Ebenezers. It is the favor of God that sets it apart and makes it unique. And I honestly believe God has blessed us because every penny of profit goes toward local outreaches and humanitarian efforts overseas!

It's a business model that invokes the blessing of God
.

Coffee with a cause!
